The Case Western Reserve University men's soccer team opened University Athletic Association play with a dominating performance on Saturday afternoon, defeating New York University 3-0 in Rutgers, New Jersey.
The win was the second straight for the Spartans, who improved to 7-1-1 overall, while NYU dropped to 1-5-2 with the loss.
It was also the second-straight shutout for the CWRU defense and their sixth overall through nine games this year.
Junior forward Brandon Kim opened the scoring for the Spartans, giving CWRU a 1-0 lead in the 18th minute with an unassisted goal, his team-lead-matching third of the year. Just over four minutes later, senior defender Josh Cook scored his first goal of the season off an assist from sophomore midfielder Camden Larson to extend the team's lead to 2-0. It was Larson's second assist of the campaign.
Cook added his second score of the game and the season in the 35th minute, giving CWRU a 3-0 lead heading into halftime. Senior defender Alex Lippiatt assisted on the goal, his team-lead-tying fourth of the year.
The two-goal game was the first multiple-goal effort of Cook's career.
CWRU finished the game outshooting NYU 16-5, including a 10-3 edge in shots on goal. Sophomore goalkeeper Bradley Winter played all 90 minutes in goal and recorded three saves for the day to notch his fifth shutout of the year. He improved to 7-1-1 on the year, while lowering his goals-against average to 0.45.
The Spartans will be back in action next Saturday, October 7, returning home to DiSanto Field to host 10th-ranked Emory at 1:30 p.m.
