Box Score Case Western Reserve University senior quarterback Alex Fromberg accounted for five touchdowns for the second-straight game, including three in the second half, to help the Spartans spoil homecoming for Bethany College with a 34-12 win over the Bison in Bethany, West Virginia on Saturday.
The win was the second straight for the Spartans, who improved to 3-1 on the season, both overall and in the Presidents' Athletic Conference. Bethany fell to 0-4 on the year, both overall and in the conference.
Fromberg threw for three touchdowns and 192 yards in the game, despite completing just seven-of-20 pass attempts and throwing his first interception of the season. He also led all CWRU rushers in the game with 67 yards and tallied two more scores on the ground. Fromberg has now accounted for 10 touchdowns in the last two games and has thrown for eight while rushing for four in 2023.
Junior Noah Coyne led all Spartan receivers with 105 yards on four catches, including a pair of touchdowns, and has now caught five touchdown passes this season.
Senior defensive end Kaden Tong had a monster game defensively for the Spartans, finishing the contest with a career-high 12 tackles (11 solo) to lead all Spartans, including two tackles for loss and a sack. Junior cornerback Dominic Sais added nine tackles (six solo), a tackle for loss, and his team-leading fourth interception of the campaign.
Bethany struck first in the game, picking off Fromberg's first pass attempt of the contest to set up a short field, resulting in an eight-yard touchdown run by Bison quarterback Sam Kayrus with 12:09 left in the opening quarter. A missed extra point after the score kept the Bethany lead at 6-0.
CWRU remained down by six points until the final play of the first quarter when Fromberg threw a 49-yard touchdown pass to senior wide receiver Michael Wojkowski to give CWRU a 7-6 advantage. Early in the second quarter, Fromberg capped off a seven-play, 56-yard drive with a three-yard run to put the Spartans ahead 14-6 with 11:34 left in the half. The Spartans remained ahead by eight heading into halftime.
Bethany pulled closer with 8:36 left in the third quarter on a 38-yard touchdown pass from Miles Goffe to Trevon Dean. However, CWRU responded quickly on its next drive, as Fromberg connected with Coyne for his second 49-yard touchdown pass of the day, giving the Spartans a 21-12 lead with 6:16 left in the third.
Fromberg threw for his third touchdown pass of the day early in the fourth, finding Coyne in the end zone from 10 yards out to extend the Spartans' advantage to 27-12 after a missed two-point conversion. With 10:44 left in the fourth, Fromberg added a rushing touchdown on a quarterback keeper from two yards out to put the Spartans in front 34-12.
The Spartans finished the game with a 351-312 edge in total yards, including a 150-106 advantage in rushing yards.
The Spartans will be back on the road next weekend, traveling to Latrobe, Pennsylvania to face Saint Vincent College on Saturday, October 7. Kickoff is scheduled for 1:00 p.m.
