Paced by top-five finishes from sophomores Lauren Iagnemma, Ashley Novak, and Ayla Grabenbauer, the Case Western Reserve University women's cross country team won the Ohio Wesleyan University Invitational at Liberty Park in Powell, Ohio on Friday night.
The Spartans finished the meet with 36 points to place first among the 13 teams that scored in the race. Ohio Northern was second with 50 points, and was followed by Ohio Wesleyan in third with 54 points.
A total of seven Spartans recorded career-best times, while three others recorded their best times of the season.
Iagnemma was the team's top finisher for the fourth time through four races this season. She finished second overall out of 141 runners in the women's 6K race, while her time of 22:07.1 marked a career-best effort and was just 3.9 seconds off of the winning time, recorded by Baldwin Wallace's Hope Murphy.
Novak was third with a season-best time of 22:35.4, while Grabenbauer finished fourth with a career-best mark of 22:46.0. Also recording career-best times were sophomore Arianna Holbrook, who was 13th with a time of 23:36.8, junior Marquis Globokar, who was 14th with a time of 23:39.1, and sophomore Julia Hluck, who was 27th with a time of 24:05.5. Sophomore Anna Avila completed the Spartans' top-seven finishers, placing 30th overall in a season-best time of 24:12.1.
Junior Mandy Lam added a season-best time of her own, crossing the finish line in 70th with a time of 25:19.4, while both first-year Kara Kister (78th, 25:41.8) and junior Alyssa Storm (85th, 26:00.4) recorded career-best times. First-year Angie Getz placed 108th with a time of 27:11.8
The Spartans will host their annual Alumni Meet next weekend at the Squire Valleevue Farm in Hunting Valley, Ohio, before returning to intercollegiate competition on Saturday, October 14 at the Mike Woods Invitational in Geneseo, New York.
