Volleyball Completes Weekend Sweep at Great Lakes Cross Over

The Case Western Reserve University volleyball team finished its weekend with a pair of sweeps on the second and final day of the Great Lakes Cross Over at the Cedar Point Sports Complex in Sandusky, Ohio, on Saturday, defeating Grove City College and Carroll University 3-0.

The Spartans improved to 4-0 with the two wins, while the Wolverines ended the day at 3-1, and the Pioneers fell to 1-3.

CWRU 3, Grove City 0 (25-12, 25-18, 25-18)

After a back-and-forth start to the morning match resulted in a 5-4 CWRU lead, the Spartans won the next seven points to gain a 12-4 advantage. Junior right side/outside hitter Chloe Maciejewski had three kills during the run, and senior setter Ansley Yamaato contributed two of her three service aces. Case Western Reserve led by as many as 13 points, 20-7, but Grove City cut into its deficit with four consecutive points. Four straight points on the service of junior outside hitter Rea Marfatia put the Spartans a point away from clinching the set, and, following an attacking error, sophomore middle blocker Amanda Ngo put down a kill to give CWRU a 1-0 lead.

The Wolverines started the second set on a 5-0 run, looking to tie the match score at 1. The Spartans cut into the deficit, eventually tying the score at nine on a service ace from senior middle blocker Jennifer Ngo and taking the lead on the next point. The teams traded the lead twice before a 6-0 CWRU run put the Spartans ahead 19-14. It was a lead the team would not relinquish, as Grove City could only get within four points for the rest of the set. A second service ace from Jennifer Ngo closed out the set victory for Case Western Reserve.

CWRU had an early six-point lead in the third set, 10-4, ending the run on a block by Marfatia. Grove City would get within four, but the Spartans would not let them close the gap further using three consecutive points to lead 18-11. After the teams traded the next eight points, an attacking error and a service ace gave the Spartans a 24-15 lead. The Wolverines would not let the match end, winning the next three points to come within six. However, a Grove City attacking error gave Case Western Reserve its final point of the match to clinch the team's third consecutive sweep.

Sophomore outside hitter Kalli Wall led the Spartans with nine kills, and Maciejewski added seven kills and two block assists. Jennifer Ngo contributed six kills and three block assists. Junior setter Carly Scott (16 assists) and Yamaato (13 assists) split the setting duties, with senior libero Alyssa Blessinger leading the way defensively with 15 digs.

Overall CWRU recorded 11 service aces in the match from six different servers, with Blessinger and Yamaato each recording three and Jennifer Ngo adding two.

CWRU 3, Carroll (Wis.) 0 (25-20, 25-18, 25-12)

CWRU held an early two-point lead in the first set, 9-7, before winning six of the next seven points to claim a 15-8 advantage. After the teams traded pairs of points, Carroll cut the Spartan lead to just three, 18-15, with a 5-1 run. A Yamaato service ace and kill by Jennifer Ngo helped the team rebuild a five-point lead, and the teams traded points for the remainder of the set. Up 24-20, Maciejewski buried a kill to clinch the first set for Case Western Reserve.

The beginning of the second set was tightly contested, with both the Spartans and Pioneers holding leads before Carroll tied the score at eight. CWRU then used a 7-2 run to lead 15-10, and increased its lead to seven, 20-13, on a Pioneer attacking error. Carroll eventually cut its deficit to four, 22-18, but three consecutive Spartan points gave Case Western Reserve a two-set advantage.

The Spartans started the second set on a 12-2 run, opening a lead they would not relinquish. The closest Carroll would get to tying the score would be at 17-9, but Case Western Reserve ended the match on an 8-3 run to clinch its fourth consecutive sweep to start the season.

Wall again led the Spartans with 10 kills and added a pair of blocks. Both Jennifer and Amanda Ngo recorded nine kills, with Jennifer adding six digs and two blocks. Scott contributed 22 assists, and Blessinger again paced the team with 18 digs.

The CWRU volleyball team will play one more match away from Cleveland before making their 2023 Horsburgh Gym debut, visiting the University of Mount Union on Wednesday, September 6 at 7 p.m.
