2022-23 CWRU Men’s Basketball Season Recap

The 2022-23 season proved to be a historic one for the Case Western Reserve University men's basketball team, which set a program record for wins, won its first-ever University Athletic Association Championship, and made the NCAA Division III Men's Basketball Championship for the second-straight season during the year.

The Spartans finished the season with a 22-4 overall record, besting the previous record for wins in a season of 20 (set last season), and finished the year ranked 15th in the final D3hoops.com Top-25. CWRU was ranked as high as seventh during the year, the highest ranking in the program's history, and were either ranked or received votes in each of the 15 D3hoops.com polls during the year for the first time in team history. The Spartans notched a pair of double-figure winning streaks during the year, reeling off 11-straight wins to open the season and 10-straight victories from January 27 through March 3.

CWRU also set a program record for UAA wins, going 11-3 in conference en route to the first league title in the program's history. After opening conference play with a 2-3 record, the Spartans reeled off nine-straight wins to end its season, clinching the UAA Championship with a 76-67 win at the University of Chicago on February 19. By winning the league, the Spartans also became the first team in Division III to punch its ticket into the NCAA Division III Championship field.

Two weeks later, the Spartans found themselves hosting NCAA Tournament games for the second-straight year. In front of a packed house at Horsburgh Gymnasium, the Spartans bested Arcadia 82-76 in the first round behind a 20-point, 12-rebound effort from senior forward Cole Frilling, to go along with 18 points from graduate student guard Danny Frauenheim, 17 points from junior guard Luke Thorburn, and 10 points from graduate student guard Mitch Prendergast. However, the next day, the Spartans came out on the short end of a 78-75 loss to Wisconsin-Whitewater to end the team's tournament run, despite a strong 24-point showing from Prendergast and 18 points off the bench from sophomore forward Umar Rashid.

CWRU's success during the season was powered by its prolific offense which averaged 85.5 points per game, the most among UAA teams and 14th among all Division III squads during the year. The team set a program record with 272 made three-point shots during the year, and its 10.5 three-pointers per game ranked as the 16th-best among Division III teams. CWRU was also 14th in Division III in free throw percentage (76.7%), 19th in assist/turnover ratio (1.36), and 35th in field goal percentage (47.3%). Defensively, the Spartans allowed 74.8 points per game.

Prendergast was named the first D3hoops.com All-American in program history, earning a spot on the second team after averaging 17.2 points per game on 44.3% shooting overall and 36.5% from three-point range, while adding 3.7 rebounds and 2.5 assists per contest. He scored 20 or more points seven times during the year, including a season-high 29 points against both Emory and WashU in back-to-back CWRU wins.

Prendergast was also named to the D3hoops.com and NABC All-Region first teams, while Frilling received second-team recognition from both organizations, and Frauenheim was selected to the D3hoops.com All-Region third team. Frilling led all UAA players with nine double-doubles during the campaign, finishing the year with 15.9 points and 8.2 rebounds per contest. Frauenheim was one of the top distributors in Division III during the year, finishing four in assists per game (7.1), sixth in total assists (184 – a school record), and 12th in assist/turnover ratio (3.02), while adding 12.3 points per game.

While Prendergast, Frilling, and Frauenheim received most of the team's postseason honors, the Spartans' success was built on contributions from a wide variety of players. Rashid played in all 26 of the team's games during the year and made nine starts, stepping into the lineup while Prendergast was hurt to begin the year. He finished the campaign third on the team with 12.9 points per contest and third with 5.3 rebounds per game while leading all Spartan players with 45 blocks, including a program-record nine blocks against WashU on January 20. Sophomore guard Sam Trunley came off the bench to average 8.5 points per game and shot a team-high 42.5% from behind the three-point line. Junior forward Ian Elam and Thorburn each played in all 26 games and made 25 starts with Elam averaging 7.4 points and 5.0 rebounds per game and Thorburn contributing 7.1 points and 5.2 rebounds per contest. Elam shot 66.4% from the floor during the year, the second-best single-season mark in program history, while Thorburn shot 61.3%, the fourth-highest ever by a Spartan.

The three each also claimed a spot on the All-UAA First Team, marking the first time in program history CWRU had multiple players named to the all-conference first team. Prendergast was named the UAA Player of the Year, becoming the first Spartan to ever receive the honor.

CWRU won its first 11 games of the campaign, the second-longest winning streak in program history, and the best start to a season ever by the squad. Included in that stretch was a win at the Sudeck Tournament in November, following which Frilling was named the tournament's Most Valuable Player after averaging 25.0 points and 10.0 rebounds, and Frauenheim was named to the all-tournament team. CWRU went 10-0 in the regular season against non-conference opponents, stretching its regular season non-conference winning streak to 20 straight games, dating back to the 2021-22 season.

Frilling reached the 1,000-point milestone for his career during the Spartans' UAA opener against Carnegie Mellon on January 7. After suffering back-to-back losses to nationally ranked teams on the road in ninth-ranked Rochester and 16th-ranked Emory, CWRU responded with a home win over 22nd-ranked WashU on January 20. A loss two days later to Chicago would prove to be the final of the regular season for the Spartans, who won their final nine UAA games of the campaign, including a 101-72 win over Brandeis on February 3 and a 102-75 win over Emory on February 12. The two one-hundred-point efforts over a four-game stretch marked just the fifth and sixth times overall in team history that CWRU had broke 100 points in a UAA contest.

The win over Emory moved the Spartans into a tie for first place in the conference with three games left to play in the schedule. Tied with WashU and headed to St. Louis for a matchup against the Bears in the next game, Prendergast knocked down a three-pointer with 18.9 seconds left in the game to give the Spartans a 75-74 win and sole possession of first place in the league. Two days later, the win over Chicago clinched the league championship for the Spartans.

Frilling finished his Spartan career with 1,220 points, the 10th-most ever by a Spartan player, despite only playing three years after losing the 2020-21 season to the pandemic. Frauenheim also eclipsed the 1,000-point milestone for his career during the season, reaching the mark against NYU on February 5, and finished his career (the first three years of which he spent at Susquehanna) with 1,100 points.

In addition to the team's athletic success during the year, several players also received accolades for their academic achievements. Elam, Rashid, Thorburn, and Trunley were each named to the College Sports Communicators Academic All-District team, while 10 total players – junior guard Jeremy Callahan, sophomore guard Diego Echavarria, Elam, junior guard Daniel Florey, Frilling, senior forward Josh Levy, senior guard Jason Lewis, Rashid, Thorburn, and Trunley – received UAA Winter All-Academic honors.
