Case Western Reserve University graduate student forward Colin Kahl scored a game-high 26 points and surpassed the 1,000-point milestone for his career, as the ninth-ranked Spartans rolled to a 100-73 win over Kalamazoo College on Saturday afternoon inside Horsburgh Gymnasium in Cleveland.
The Spartans improved to 6-0 on the season with the win, while Kalamazoo fell to 5-3. It was CWRU's 26th-consecutive regular-season win against a non-conference opponent.
Kahl finished the game shooting 10-of-13 overall and three-of-six from behind the three-point line, while also leading all Spartan players with eight rebounds, five assists, and two blocks. Entering the contest with 980 career points (907 of which were scored at Sewanee as an undergraduate student), he surpassed the 1,000-career point mark with a layup with 7:51 to play in the game.
Graduate student guard Anthony Mazzeo added 18 points on Saturday, while junior forward Umar Rashid finished with 16, and junior guard Sam Trunley scored 10, his second-straight double-figure scoring effort off the bench for CWRU.
It was the second 100-point effort of the season for the Spartans, who opened the campaign with a 104-73 win over Pitt-Bradford. CWRU finished the game shooting 56.7% (38-67) from the floor and 48.5% (16-33) from three-point range, both season-best marks. The Spartans also notched season-highs with 23 assists, nine blocks, and six steals as a team.
The game was close through most of the first half with neither team taking more than a four-point lead through the first 13 minutes. With the score tied at 27-27 and under eight minutes to go in the first half, Kahl scored seven unanswered points as part of a 9-0 run that gave CWRU a 36-27 lead with 5:47 to play. CWRU ended the half on an 8-2 run, including a three by Preston Maccoux with 53 seconds left that put the Spartans ahead to put the team ahead 46-36 heading into halftime.
CWRU never led by less than eight points for the remainder of the game and a 10-0 run, capped off with a layup by Kahl with 6:36 to play, put the team ahead 84-57. The Spartans led by as many as 30 points in the game after a three by first-year guard Charlie Fox with 1:53 left put the team ahead 97-67, as CWRU went on to a 27-point win.
Twelve different CWRU players scored in the game, as the Spartans finished with a 35-18 edge in bench points.
The Spartans will be back in action next weekend, beginning a stretch of six-straight games away from Horsburgh Gymnasium against Adrian College in Adrian, Michigan on Saturday, December 9 at 3:00 p.m.
