Case Western Reserve University graduate student guard Anthony Mazzeo scored a season-high 29 points and junior guard Sam Trunley came off the bench to register a double-double as the 13th-ranked Spartans picked up a 78-58 win over La Roche University in Pittsburgh on Wednesday night.
The Spartans improved to 3-0 with the win, while the Hawks dropped to 0-2.
Mazzeo shot 12-of-21 from the floor, including five-of-12 from behind the three point line, while adding four rebounds and three assists. Trunley scored 15 points on four-of-nine shooting from the floor and collected a career-high 11 rebounds for the first double-double of his collegiate career. Graduate student guard Richie Manigault added 10 points in his first start as a Spartan and senior forward Ian Elam scored five points with eight rebounds, four assists, and career-highs with four blocks and two steals.
Seventeen of Mazzeo's 29 points on Wednesday came in the first half as he helped lead the team to a 42-34 lead by the break. After falling behind 4-0 in the first two minutes of the game, three pointers on back-to-back possessions by Manigault and Mazzeo gave the Spartans a 6-4 lead with 17:25 to play, and the team would never trail again in the game. CWRU led by as many as 12 points in the opening half, going ahead 38-26 on a layup by Mazzeo with 3:06 to play in the period, and took an eight-point lead into halftime.
A three pointer by junior forward Umar Rashid with 17:08 left in the game put CWRU in front 50-39, and the team would maintain a double digit lead the rest of the game. The Spartans led by as many as 23 in the game, taking a 78-55 advantage on a layup by sophomore forward Aaron Rucker with 1:43 to play, before closing out the 20-point win.
CWRU finished the game shooting 38.4% overall, including 35.5% from three-point range.
The Spartans will be back in action on Saturday, traveling to Granville, Ohio for a 2:00 p.m. game against Denison University.
