#8 Spartans Defeat Grove City 5-1 in First Round of NCAAs

The eighth-ranked Case Western Reserve University women's soccer team put together a dominating performance in the opening round of the 2023 NCAA Division III Championship, defeating Grove City College 5-1 at DiSanto Field in Cleveland on Saturday.

The Spartans, now 12-1-4 for the season, will advance to the second round for the third-straight season and the fourth-time overall in the program's history. Grove City's season came to a close with a 14-5-1 record.

The CWRU win sets up a crosstown battle in the second round tomorrow, as the Spartans will face off against John Carroll, which defeated Cortland 3-0 later in the day. Sunday's contest is set for a 1:00 p.m. start.

CWRU was dominant throughout the contest, offshooting Grove City 32-3, including an 18-0 edge in the first 45 minutes, and a 15-1 edge in shots on goal. The Spartan defense did not allow a shot to the Wolverines until the 71st minute of the game.

Sophomore forward Alexis Sassower got the Spartans on the board in the 20th minute, scoring her second goal of the year on a turnaround shot from the edge of the 18-yard box.

Despite a plethora of opportunities, the Spartans would be unable to add onto their lead in the first half, carrying a 1-0 lead into halftime. However, CWRU quickly extended its lead in the second half, going ahead 2-0 on a goal by sophomore midfielder Ceci Dapino, her third of the year.

Junior forward Carolyn Koutures added to the advantage with her fourth goal of the season in the 60th minute of the game, scoring off an assist from sophomore forward Molly Shamah, her second of the campaign. In the 66th minute, an assist from Dapino, her first of the campaign, set up a goal by senior forward Helina VanBibber, her third of the year, putting the Spartans ahead 4-0.

Grove City would score a late goal on a header off a corner kick by Natalie Merrick, but the Spartans would secure the win with an unassisted goal by sophomore Maggie Farra, her third of the year, in the 89th minute of the contest.

The Spartans will now turn their attention to the Blue Streaks, who stand at 14-1-5 on the year and whose only loss of the season was a 2-1 setback to the Spartans in the opening game of the season at DiSanto Field on September 1.
