Game Recap: Women's Soccer |

No. 6 Women’s Soccer Defeats No. 25 Emory, Hartzler Sets Career Assists Record

The sixth-ranked Case Western Reserve University women's soccer team used three goals and a record-setting assist from senior forward Aniya Hartzler to earn a 3-1 win over 25th-ranked Emory University on Saturday afternoon at DiSanto Field in Cleveland.

The Spartans improved to 10-0-1 overall, extending their regular season unbeaten streak to 32 matches. CWRU also extended its conference unbeaten streak to 13 matches, improving to 2-0-0 in University Athletic Association play with the win. The Eagles fell to 5-3-2 overall and 0-2-0 in the UAA.

Case Western Reserve scored early in the match, with first-year defender Maya Healy notching her second goal of the season on a set piece. Hartzler sent a corner kick into the middle of the box, and Healy jumped to connect her head with the ball. Her header sailed past the diving goalkeeper and into the lower left corner of the net.

Hartzler earned her first assist of the season on the play and the 22nd of her career, breaking a tie with former Spartans Anika Washburn and Hallie Graor for the most in program history.

Just seven minutes later, sophomore midfielder Jamie Goldfarb doubled the team's advantage with a highlight reel goal. Facing away from the net, Goldfarb leaped into a bicycle kick to connect on a ball from sophomore forward Alexis Sassower. The shot lofted in the air and landed in the same lower left corner of the goal. It was Goldfarb's second score of the season and the fifth of her career. Sassower earned her second assist of the season on the play.

After neither team scored for the next 65 minutes, sophomore midfielder Mackenzie Mueller put the match away with her second goal of the season. Heading unmarked into the center of the box, Mueller received a cross from sophomore forward Andrea Silva and fired a shot into the top left corner of the goal, beyond the outstretched arms of the Emory goalkeeper. Mueller became the sixth Spartan with exactly two goals in the 2023 season, and Silva earned her third assist to tie for the team lead.

The Eagles scored in the 88th minute to prevent another Spartan clean sheet. The goal ended Case Western Reserve's stretch of 504 minutes and 52 seconds without conceding, a streak that dated back to September 16. Senior goalkeeper Maggie Storti saved one shot in 90 minutes to earn her 10th win of the season and the 47th of her career.

Emory outshot CWRU 12-6 in the contest, but five of the Spartans' shots were on goal compared to just two for the Eagles. Sassower led the hosts with two shots, both of which were on target.

The Spartans continue conference play next Saturday, traveling to Rochester, New York, to face the 12th-ranked University of Rochester at 11 a.m.
