The Case Western Reserve University volleyball team extended its season-long winning streak to six matches on Wednesday night at Horsburgh Gymnasium in Cleveland, sweeping Oberlin College 25-12, 25-17, 26-24 in a non-conference match.
With the win, the Spartans improved to 15-4, while the Yeowomen fell to 10-3 on the season.
The CWRU attack was led by junior outside hitter Rea Marfatia, who tallied a season-high 16 kills and nine digs in the contest. Senior middle blocker Jennifer Ngo added nine kills and four total blocks, and junior middle blocker Lily Crouch contributed six kills on seven attacks. Defensively, senior libero Alyssa Blessinger tallied a team-high 19 digs, and senior setter Ansley Yamaato secured 12 digs. Yamaato and junior setter/right side hitter Carly Scott each had 17 assists.
The match started evenly with the score tied at five. CWRU won seven of the next eight points to take a seven-point advantage, ending the run on a service ace by Yamaato. Oberlin cut its deficit to just four, 14-10, but the Spartans responded by winning the next 10 points on the service of Blessinger. The 10th point in the run was the 24th of the set for Case Western Reserve, but an Oberlin kill kept the set alive. Marfatia ended the set on the next point with a kill of her own, giving the hosts a 1-0 advantage in the match.
CWRU continued using its momentum in the second set, beginning the frame with a 7-2 run. After a Yeowoman point, the Spartans won the next four points to take an 11-3 lead. Oberlin cut into its deficit, making the score 13-10 on a service ace. After the teams split the next four points, a kill by Ngo and a bad Oberlin set put the hosts ahead by five. Following a Yeowoman point, the Spartans won four of the next five to take a 21-14 lead. Of those four points, three came on blocks by Ngo, Crouch, and sophomore outside hitter Kalli Wall. The visitors closed the gap to five, but CWRU ended the set on a 4-1 run to take a 2-0 lead in the match.
The Spartans started the third set with a 13-5 run, looking to quickly close out the match. However, Oberlin would not go away, winning five of the next six points to make the score 14-10. The teams split the next seven points with Case Western Reserve holding an 18-13 lead on a kill by sophomore middle blocker Kiya Levy. Oberlin cut its deficit to three, 19-16, but three consecutive CWRU points put the hosts up six. The Yeowomen went on an 8-2 run to tie the score at 24 and force a Spartan timeout. Following the break, Ngo buried her ninth kill of the match to give the team the lead, and an Oberlin attacking error ended the set and the match in favor of the hosts.
