In a battle of top 10 teams, the sixth-ranked Case Western Reserve University women's soccer team lost to second-ranked Washington University in St. Louis 2-0 on Sunday afternoon at DiSanto Field in Cleveland.
The loss was the first of the season for the Spartans, who fell to 10-1-3 overall and 2-1-1 in University Athletic Association contests. The Bears improved to 13-0-1 on the season and 4-0-1 in conference play.
The visitors scored twice in the first half, first in the 13th minute on a long shot by Sophie Viscovich and then in the 43rd minute on a strike by Madison Foley.
CWRU was unable to break through against the WashU defense that has yet to allow a goal this season. The hosts recorded two shots in the contest. Sophomore midfielder/forward Ceci Dapino recorded a shot on goal in the 85th minute, and senior Aniya Hartzler attempted a shot on a free kick just outside the box in the 29th minute.
The Spartans will look to rebound on Saturday when the team travels to Waltham, Massachusetts, to face Brandeis at 11 a.m.
