Box Score The Case Western Reserve University men's soccer team picked up its first win of the 2022 campaign on Wednesday night, defeating Bethany College 3-1 in the Spartans' home-opening game at DiSanto Field.
Senior Adrian Harkness, graduate student Alexandru Rumleanschi and junior Jacob Salmon each registered their first goal of the season on Wednesday for the Spartans, who improved to 1-1-1 overall. Bethany, which entered the game undefeated and is coming off a PAC Championship campaign in 2021, dropped to 3-1-0 following the loss.
The Spartans have now scored seven goals in their last two games, and eight goals through three games this season.
Harkness got the Spartans on the board in the 15th minute of the game, sending a shot off the Bethany keeper's hands and into the goal for his first score of the year. Senior Matt Vatne crossed the ball to Harkness to set up the goal to earn the assist on the play, his first of the year.
Bethany evened the score with a goal in the 20th minute on a header off a corner kick, but the Spartans would regain the lead on a set piece of their own later in the half. In the 38th minute, Vatne would secure his second assist of the contest when he sent a corner kick into the box that Rumleanschi redirected into the back of the net for his first goal as a Spartan, giving CWRU a 2-1 advantage.
The score remained 2-1 until the 65th minute, when a shot by Harkness was deflected by the Bison keeper directly to the feet of Salmon, who returned a shot into the goal to give the Spartans some insurance, extending the lead to 3-1.
Senior keeper Jackson Kallen played all 90 minutes in goal, making a pair of saves and allowing just one goal while improving to 1-1-1 on the season. The Spartans' defense held Bethany to just six shots in the game, including three on goal. Meanwhile, CWRU was able to take 16 shots in the contest, nine of which were on target.
CWRU will continue its three-game home stand on Saturday, September 10, playing host to Otterbein University at 2:00 p.m. at DiSanto Field.
