Box Score The Case Western Reserve University football team suffered a loss in its season-opening contest on Saturday, falling 54-14 to 10th-ranked Johns Hopkins University on Saturday afternoon at DiSanto Field.
In his first game for CWRU, sophomore quarterback Ian Kipp came off the bench late to score a pair of touchdowns in the fourth quarter. Kipp put the Spartans on the board with 10:58 left in the game, rushing for a 25-yard touchdown to cap off a five-play, 75-yard drive. Later in the quarter, he put a bow on an 11-play, 70-yard drive with a two-yard touchdown pass to junior running back Dominic Wade with three minutes remaining in the game.
Kipp finished the game three-for-four passing with 44 yards and a touchdown while rushing for a team-high 54 yards, including the 25-yard scamper for a score.
However, it was an uphill battle for CWRU for most of the game on Saturday. CWRU's defense stopped the Blue Jays on three-straight goal line plays on the first drive of the game, but Johns Hopkins would go on to take a 14-0 lead after the first quarter and a 34-0 lead into the halftime. The Blue Jays led 48-0 before the Spartans struck for their first score of the game in the fourth quarter.
CWRU finished the game with 319 yards of total offense, including 213 passing and 106 rushing. Four different CWRU quarterbacks saw action in the game, including senior starter Drew Saxton (13-for-25, 97 yards), Kipp, junior Alex Fromberg (two-for-two, 39 yards), and first-year Aaron Filips (two-for-four, 33 yards). Sophomore receivers Noah Coyne (46 yards) and Ethan Dahlem (43 yards) each caught a pair of passes, and senior running back Antonio Orsini added 53 yards on the ground.
Defensively for the Spartans, sophomore defensive back Dominic Sais led all players with nine tackles (seven solo) and a pass breakup, and junior linebacker Gabe Troch added seven tackles and a sack.
The Spartans will be back in action on Saturday, September 10, when the team travels to Waynesburg, Pennsylvania for a non-conference meeting with Waynesburg University. Kickoff is scheduled for 1:00 p.m.
