The Case Western Reserve University men's soccer team shut out Allegheny College on Saturday afternoon at Robertson Athletic Complex in Meadville, Pennsylvania to secure a 2-0 non-conference victory.
The Spartans improved to 3-1-2 on the season, while the Gators fell to 1-4-0.
After a scoreless first half, senior midfielder Sean Atwater scored his first goal of the season in the 50th minute, breaking the deadlock. Senior midfielder Matt Vatne laced a corner kick into the middle of the box, and Atwater headed the ball past the Gator goalkeeper. It was Vatne's third assist of the season.
In the 65th minute, sophomore midfielder Lukas Dalakis doubled the CWRU advantage. Junior midfielder Caleb Tan sent a long lob from midfield into the box, which Atwater headed toward Dalakis. The sophomore unleashed a strike into the back of the net for his second goal of the season. Atwater and Tan earned assists on the play, the first of the season for Tan and second for Atwater.
The Spartan defense had its best game of the season, not allowing a shot until the 74th minute of play. Overall, CWRU outshot Allegheny 21-2. Senior goalkeeper Jackson Kallen collected one save to secure his first shutout of the campaign and the sixth of his career.
Case Western Reserve continues non-conference play on Tuesday, September 20 when the team faces Defiance College at 4 p.m.
