CWRU Men's Soccer Draws with John Carroll, 2-2

Box Score

The Case Western Reserve University men's soccer team battled to a 2-2 tie against crosstown rival John Carroll University in a non-conference matchup at DiSanto Field on Wednesday night.

The Spartans now stand at 2-1-2 following the tie, while John Carroll moved to 2-2-1.

An acrobatic goal by junior defender Jad Oglesby helped the Spartans take an early lead in the game. The score was set up by a corner kick from senior midfielder Matt Vatne that stayed in the box, eventually getting deflected in Oglesby's direction. Oglesby executed a perfectly timed bicycle kick, sending a rocket into the back of the net for his second goal of the campaign.

John Carroll responded with two goals of its own, tying the game in the 16th minute on Nicholas Felician's third goal of the campaign, and taking the lead in the 23rd minute on a strike by Logan Penton, his first of the year.

Vatne would take matters into his own hands later to tie the score at the end of the first half, going on a long run down the sideline, before bringing the ball back to the middle of the field and maneuvering around multiple defenders. He then launched a low shot from 25 yards out that found its way into the goal, knotting the score at 2-2 in the 44th minute. It was Vatne's team-leading third goal of the campaign.

After the flurry of first-half goals, both defenses settled in for the second half, as the score remained 2-2, and the game ended in a tie after regulation.

CWRU totaled 14 shots in the game, compared to seven for John Carroll. The Spartans also held a 6-3 edge in shots on goal.

Vatne led all Spartan players with three shots, all of which were on target. Senior goalkeeper Jackson Kallen played all 90 minutes, making one save during the contest.

Wednesday night's game ended a stretch of three straight home games for CWRU against teams that qualified for the NCAA Division III Championship field in 2021. The Spartans finished the three games with a 2-0-1 record.

With the three-game home stand now behind them, the Spartans will wrap up September with three-straight road games before the start of University Athletic Association play. CWRU will begin its road swing at Allegheny College on Saturday, September 17 at 3:00 p.m.
