Box Score Case Western Reserve University women's soccer Head Coach Abby Richter earned her first career win as the 12th-ranked Spartans defeated Capital University 4-2 on Thursday night at DiSanto Field in Cleveland, Ohio.
The Spartans improve to 1-0-0 on the season, while the Comets drop to 0-1-0. CWRU has not lost a regular season non-conference contest since Sept 25, 2018, a stretch of 1,444 days.
Graduate student forward Samantha Cramin, making her Spartan debut, tallied two assists and the go-ahead goal in the 71st minute. Graduate student forward Camryn Hartman, senior defender/forward Merry Meyer, and senior forward Aniya Hartzler all scored for the Spartans in front of a large crowd for the season opener.
After a scoreless first half, the visitors struck first in the 55th minute, when Avery Hart scored a screamer from outside the box.
However, the Spartans responded quickly in the 59th minute. Hartman scored her first goal as a Spartan, making her way into the box on a pass from Cramin. Hartman's shot deflected off the Comet goalkeeper and into the net.
Hart doubled her tally in the 63rd minute, putting Capital ahead 2-1 with another long shot that beat the Spartan goalkeeper.
Case Western Reserve again responded quickly, tying the score in the 66th minute with the first of three unanswered goals. On a corner kick sent to the far post, sophomore forward Carolyn Koutures sent a pass to Meyer at the top of the box. Meyer sent a strike just out of reach of the Capital goalkeeper to tie the score at two.
Cramin scored the go-ahead goal just five minutes later, taking advantage of a scramble in front of the net. A Spartan cross was stopped on the goal line by a defender, allowing Cramin to collect the ball and tap it in.
Hartzler capped the scoring in the 74th minute. In the middle of the box, Cramin used a backward kick to find Hartzler running unmarked on the near side of the goal. She pushed it past the keeper and into the back of the net for the fourth CWRU goal of the day.
Overall, Case Western Reserve outshot Capital 26 to nine. The hosts registered 13 shots on goal to the visitors' five. Junior goalkeeper Maggie Storti earned the win in the net, the 17th of her career, saving three shots.
The Spartans will look to keep their non-conference streak alive on Sunday, September 4, when the team hosts Otterbein. Kickoff from DiSanto Field scheduled for 1 p.m.
