Behind a second-place finish from junior jumper Mia Vargo, the Case Western Reserve University women's track and field team finished the two-day University Athletic Association Outdoor Track & Field Championships at Bushyhead Track in St. Louis, Missouri in fourth place with 71.0 points.
Washington University in St. Louis, the championship hosts, won the conference title with 286.0 points, followed by Chicago (192.0 points) and Emory (118.5 points).
Vargo tied for second in the high jump with a mark of 1.58 meters to earn All-UAA honors. It is the second honor of her career after she was the runner-up in the high jump at the 2020 UAA Indoor Championships.
First-year hurdler/jumper Sarah Ozeki had the second-highest individual finish for the team, placing fourth in the triple jump with a mark of 11.41 meters. The jump is second best in program history and just 0.20 meters from the school record. Sophomore sprinter/jumper Emily Hopkins placed fifth in the event with a jump of 11.28 meters.
Ozeki and Hopkins were joined by sophomore sprinter Elise Moore and sophomore sprinter/jumper Anna Zinsser for the 4x100-meter relay. The Spartans took fourth in the event with a time of 51.17 seconds. Individually, Moore placed eighth in the 400-meter dash with a time of 1:01.16 in the finals. She qualified with a time of 59.28 seconds in the prelims on Saturday.
In the discus throw, sophomore thrower Adrienne Wachtman finished fifth with a toss of 35.95 meters, while in the 5,000-meter run, senior mid-distance runner Jana Fisher recorded the best time by a Spartan since 2018, 17:36.40. She finished fifth in the event.
Adding four points for CWRU was sophomore distance runner Jessica Kwasny, who crossed the finish line fifth in the 800-meter run finals in 2:17.05. In the Saturday prelims, she recorded a time of 2:15.94. Kwasny joined Moore, junior hurdler Mia Kilroy, and junior mid-distance runner Melissa Phung for the 4x400-meter relay, which placed sixth in 4:05.81. Kilroy contributed an individual sixth-place finish in the 400-meter hurdles finals, finishing in 1:06.38 after recording a preliminary time of 1:04.87.
The Spartan women's team totaled four All-UAA finishes at the meet, including one conference champion. In addition to Vargo, Wachtman won the javelin throw, first-year jumper Lauren Roskuszka placed third in the event, and junior pole vaulter Victoria Zhao placed second in the pole vault.
The Spartans will be off from competition until Friday, May 13 when the team travels to Berea, Ohio for the Harrison Dillard Twilight hosted by Baldwin Wallace University. The meet will be one of the final chances for CWRU athletes to earn qualifying marks for the NCAA Division III Track & Field Championships.
