Box Score Despite a team-leading sixth double-double of the season from sophomore forward Kayla Characklis, the Case Western Reserve University women's basketball team fell to Carnegie Mellon 71-56 on 'Senior Day' inside Horsburgh Gymnasium in Cleveland, Ohio on Saturday afternoon.
The Spartans end the season with an 8-17 record and 3-11 mark in University Athletic Association play, while the Tartans finish the season at 12-11 and 6-8 in the UAA. CWRU finished tied for seventh in the conference, while Carnegie Mellon finished sixth.
Characklis had a game-high 19 points on eight-of-nine (88.9%) shooting and a team-high 10 rebounds in the contest. Junior guard/forward Isabella Mills added 14 points, five rebounds, three assists, and four steals.
Case Western Reserve took a four-point lead, 15-11, midway through the first quarter when Mills finished a three-point play with a free throw. Carnegie Mellon responded with an 8-0 run to retake the advantage and led by four at the end of the quarter 21-17.
At the beginning of the third quarter, the Spartans trimmed the deficit to just two with a 7-0 run. A jumper from Characklis put the score at 42-40 with six minutes left in the quarter. Sophomore guard Sarah Mitchell, who finished with seven points and a career-high-tying seven rebounds added three points in the run. The Tartans closed the quarter on a 16-0 run to put the game out of reach.
CWRU held Carnegie Mellon to just three-from-15 (20.0%) from beyond the arc and forced 16 turnovers.
In the last minute of play, senior guard/forward Abbey Lawrence pulled down a rebound and made a jumper in her final appearance as a Spartan. Lawrence, who missed the previous five games, was honored before the game in a 'Senior Day' celebration. She finishes her career with 987 points, 15th most in program history.
The loss concludes the 2021-22 season for Case Western Reserve.
