CWRU Women's Basketball Prevails in Overtime against Emory 68-61

Box Score

The Case Western Reserve University women's basketball team capitalized on a 13-0 run in overtime to storm past Emory University 68-61 on Friday night in Atlanta, Georgia.

The win put an end to a four-game losing streak for the Spartans, who improved to 8-15 overall and to 3-9 in University Athletic Association play. The win was the second overtime victory of the season for CWRU, which bested WashU in extra time earlier in the year, and the team's first road overtime victory since a 91-84 win over Denison on November 20, 2018.

Emory fell to 14-8 overall and to 7-5 in conference games following the loss.

Junior guard/forward Isabella Mills led all players in the game with 24 points and 11 rebounds for her second double-double of the season and the seventh of her career. She logged 41 minutes in the game, shooting seven-of-13 overall and making four-of-five from three-point range. Junior guard McKenna Gross added 13 points for the Spartans on Friday night.

Making just her third start of the season, sophomore forward Preet Gill paced the Spartans in the first quarter, scoring all eight of her points during the frame, and with the score tied at 14-14 late in the period, a pair of free throws in the closing seconds by sophomore guard Margaret Terry helped CWRU take a 16-14 edge into the second half. CWRU grabbed a seven-point lead late in the second quarter, after a traditional three-point play by Gross put the Spartans ahead 28-21 with 2:10 left in the half, but the Eagles cut the lead to a point, 28-27, by halftime.

The Spartans went on to open an eight-point lead in the third on a layup by sophomore forward Kayla Characklis with 3:08 left that put the team ahead 40-32, but Emory closed the gap to a point, 42-41, by the end of the quarter. CWRU continued to lead until the 5:47 mark, when a pair of free throws put the Eagles ahead by a point, 50-49. The teams exchanged one-point leads until a jumper by Gross put the Spartans ahead 53-52 with 2:36 left and after a miss by Emory on the other end, Mills knocked down a pair of free throws to put CWRU on top by three with 1:58 to play. Emory would pull within one on a layup off a steal with 1:28 left and tied the game at 55-55 on a free throw by Mariane Auza with 29 seconds left. However, Auza missed the second free throw, giving the Spartans a chance to win the game, but a missed jumper by Gross with four second left kept the score knotted. Emory turned the ball over with an errant pass out of bounds with 0.4 of a second left to give the Spartans one final shot, but CWRU did not get a shot off and the game went into overtime.

After Emory scored the first basket of the extra period, CWRU got baskets on back-to-back possessions from Mills and Characklis to go ahead 59-57 with 3:15 remaining. Mills then added a long three as the shot clock expired with 2:19 remaining, putting the Spartans up five points, 62-57. The Spartans continued to add to their lead, completing a 13-0 run to go ahead 68-57 with 50 seconds left, putting the game out of reach for Emory.

The Spartans outshot Emory 41.1% to 32.9% overall on Friday night, including a 38.5% to 9.1% mark from behind the three-point line. CWRU also knocked down 89.5% of its free throws, compared to just 61.1% for the Eagles.

The Spartans will travel to Rochester, New York for their final road game of the 2021-22 season on Sunday at 2:00 p.m. against the University of Rochester.
