Box Score The 13th-ranked Case Western Reserve University men's basketball team wrapped up the 2022 portion of its schedule with an 85-55 win over Earlham College at Horsburgh Gymnasium in Cleveland on Sunday afternoon.
The win is the ninth straight for the Spartans, who improved to 9-0 on the season. CWRU extended its best start to a season in program history with the victory and captured its 19th consecutive regular season non-conference win. Case Western Reserve remained one of 12 unbeaten teams in Division III this season.
The Quakers fell to 1-8 on the season.
Four Spartans scored in double figures, with 13 members of the squad registering a point in the contest. Sophomore forward Umar Rashid paced the team with 13 points and added four rebounds, senior forward Cole Frilling scored 12 points and collected six rebounds, graduate student guard Mitch Prendergast added 12 points in his 2022-23 debut, and sophomore guard Sam Trunley contributed 10 points off the bench. CWRU outrebound Earlham 43-26 as junior forward Ian Elam led all players with seven boards.
Overall, Case Western Reserve shot a season-best 53.7% from the field and 44.0% from beyond the arc, the team's second-best performance from three-point range this season. On the other end, the Spartans held the Quakers to just 32.3% overall and 12.0% (3-for-25) on three-point attempts.
For the second consecutive contest, the Spartans led for the entire game, opening the contest with an 11-3 run. After the Quakers cut the deficit to two, 16-14, midway through the first half, a three-pointer by Rashid ignited a 12-2 CWRU run to give the hosts a 12-point lead. The Spartans then outscored the Quakers 13-5 over the final 2:24 of the first half, taking a 43-25 lead into the break.
Case Western Reserve would take a 37-point lead on a three-pointer by Prendergast midway through the second half, its largest of the afternoon, as the team pulled away with a strong performance on both ends of the floor to close the game. The Spartans made 61.5% (16-for-26) of their shots in the second half, including a blistering 60.0% (six-for-10) on three-pointers. Meanwhile, the Quakers made just one three-pointer in the final 20 minutes on 17 attempts (5.9%) and converted just 31.6% (12-for-38) of their shots.
The Spartans will take a break for the winter holidays and finals before resuming the season on January 1, 2023, with a home matchup against Hilbert at 3 p.m.
