Box Score Case Western Reserve University graduate student guard Danny Frauenheim exploded for a season-high 26 points on Monday afternoon to lead the 14th-ranked Spartans to a 94-71 win over Medaille College in Buffalo, New York.
Monday's win extended CWRU's program-best start to 8-0 for the year, as the team remained one of the 15 undefeated teams in Division III men's basketball. Medaille dropped to 1-6 following the loss.
The Spartans' 94 points were a season-high and marked the team's second-straight effort of 90 or more points. CWRU finished the game shooting 51.7% from the floor and 40.6% from three-point range, connecting on 13 long-range shots during the contest. The Spartans also held a 40-30 edge in rebounding on Monday.
Frauenheim finished the game shooting nine-of-15 and connected on three-of-six three-point tries for his first 20-point effort as a Spartan. He added eight assists and four steals in the all-around strong showing.
Senior forward Cole Frilling finished with 19 points, eight rebounds, three assists, and three steals. He now has 962 points for his career, moving within 38 of becoming the 20th player in program history with 1,000 career points. Also finishing in double figures on Monday were sophomore forward Umar Rashid and junior forward Ian Elam, who each tallied 11 points in the winning effort.
The Spartans led from wire-to-wire on Monday, opening the game on a 7-0 run and going ahead by 14 after a layup by junior guard Luke Thorburn put CWRU ahead 16-2 at the 15:14 mark. CWRU continued to put up points throughout the period, dominating with an inside-out game that saw the team take 30 of their 31 shots as either three-point attempts or layups. The Spartans finished the period with an 18-point lead, 55-37, their largest of the half.
As a team, CWRU shot a blistering 58.1% from the floor in the first half, including 40.0% (six-of-15) from three-point range. Frilling and Frauenheim each scored 16 points during the first 20 minutes of the game to lead the Spartans.
CWRU maintained a double-figure lead for the entire second half, going ahead by as many as 28, following a three-point shot by Rashid that put the Spartans in front 86-58 with 6:44 to play in the game.
Case Western Reserve will return home to host Earlham on Sunday in its final game of the 2022 calendar year. Tip-off is scheduled for 2:00 p.m. at Horsburgh Gym.
