Box Score The 14th-ranked Case Western Reserve University men's basketball team kept its winning streak going with a 93-58 win at Kalamazoo College in Kalamazoo, Michigan on Saturday afternoon.
CWRU improved to 7-0 overall, while Kalamazoo dropped to 1-5 following the setback. It was the 17th consecutive non-conference regular season win for the Spartans, dating back to last season.
CWRU sophomore forward Umar Rashid was the team's leading scorer for the second-straight game, finishing with 18 points and seven rebounds on a six-of-12 overall shooting effort, including four-of-eight from three-point range while adding three blocks and two steals. Senior forward Cole Frilling notched his sixth double-double through seven games this season, totaling 14 points and 12 rebounds with three steals. Three other Spartan players finished in double figures, including junior guard Daniel Florey (12 points), junior guard Luke Thorburn (10 points), and sophomore guard Sam Trunley (10 points). Graduate student guard Danny Frauenheim dished out a team-leading seven assists.
CWRU opened up an 11-point lead by the end of the first half, 45-34, in large part due to outstanding bench play from Florey and Trunley, who combined for 22 of the team's 45 points in the opening half. Florey did all of his damage from behind the arc, connecting on four of his five three-point attempts for 12 points, while Trunley added 10 first-half points. Rashid added a team-high 14 points in the opening half.
As a team, CWRU made nine-of-19 three-point attempts during the first 20 minutes of the game, and shot 53.1% overall during the first half, allowing the team to withstand a strong shooting first half for the Hornets, who finished the period shooting 47.0% overall, including six-of-14 from three-point range.
The Spartans cemented their lead early in the second half, scoring the first 11 points of the period unanswered and going on a 21-2 run to start the frame to take a 66-36 lead by the 13:37 mark. CWRU went on to take their largest lead of the game, 35 points, in the closing minute of the contest.
CWRU finished the game with major advantages in most statistical categories, outshooting Kalamazoo 50.0% to 32.7% overall, including 47.1% to 26.7% from three-point range. The Spartans outrebounded the Hornets 45-24 and held a 20-7 edge in assists while finishing with scoring advantages of 25-9 off turnovers, 14-4 on second-chance opportunities, 30-16 in the paint, 9-2 on the fastbreak, and 42-16 from the bench.
CWRU connected on a season-high 16 three-point shots in the game, its most since hitting 17 three-point shots against John Carroll on November 27. The team's 93 points scored were also a season-high mark.
Case Western Reserve will be back in action on Monday, December 12, traveling to Buffalo, New York for a 1:30 p.m. tipoff at Medaille College. The game is a makeup from the scheduled contest between the two teams on November 19 that was postponed due to a snowstorm in Buffalo.
