UAA Champions! Women's Soccer Claims First Ever Conference Title with Win Over CMU

Box Score

The Case Western Reserve University women's soccer team won its first ever University Athletic Association championship on Saturday by defeating archrival #7 Carnegie Mellon University 1-0 at DiSanto Field in Cleveland, Ohio.

The Spartans, ranked fourth in Division III, completed their first ever undefeated regular season with a record of 15-0-1 and a 6-0-1 record in UAA contests. CWRU clinched the conference's automatic bid to the 2022 NCAA Division III Women's Soccer Championship, its third consecutive season reaching the postseason and fourth appearance in program history. The 15 regular season wins and six conference wins both set new program records. The Tartans fell to 12-2-2 overall and 5-1-1 in the UAA, placing second in the conference with 16 points. The contest served as a de facto UAA Championship match, with the winner claiming the conference title.

First-year midfielder Jamie Goldfarb scored the lone goal of the contest in the sixth minute. Senior defender Elizabeth White sent a free kick from about 40 yards away into the box. Goldfarb, rushing toward the six-yard box on the far side of the goal, headed the ball past a diving goalkeeper into the bottom right corner of the goal. It was just the second goal of the season for Goldfarb and the second assist of the season for White.

Case Western Reserve's defense, led by junior goalkeeper Maggie Storti, was able to shutout the Tartans for the remainder of the match. White, seniors Lexi Gomez and Merry Meyer, and sophomore Katie Rishel all played 90 minutes on the backline to ensure the Spartan victory. Storti saved two shots in the match, picking up her 17th career shutout and lowering her goals against average to 0.54 this season. In seven conference matches, Storti allowed just four goals and earned four shutouts.

Offensively, graduate student forward Camryn Hartman tallied two shots to lead the team. CMU outshot CWRU 9-6 for the match.

The Spartans will learn their first round opponent and the location of the match on Monday during the NCAA Selection Show, starting at 2 p.m. exclusively on ncaa.com. More information regarding the postseason will be posted on athletics.case.edu and the CWRU Athletics social media channels before and after the announcement.
