Box Score The 24th-ranked Case Western Reserve University men's soccer team finished its regular season with a 3-2 win over archrival Carnegie Mellon University at DiSanto Field in Cleveland, Ohio on Saturday afternoon.
The Spartans picked up their 10th win to complete the regular season with an overall record of 10-3-3, including a 5-1-1 mark in University Athletic Association contests. CWRU finished second in the conference, three points behind Chicago, its best finish since 2018. The five conference wins are the most since the 2011 season, and the Spartans earned double digits wins for just the third time in the last 10 full seasons. The Tartans ended the regular season with a 11-4-1 record and a 3-4-0 record in UAA play.
Case Western Reserve fell behind early in the contest, conceding a goal in the sixth minute to Diederik Schlingeman. Neither team was able to find the back of the net for most of the remainder of the first half, until graduate student defender Alexandru Rumleanschi scored his second goal of the season with 1:19 left on the clock. A lob from junior defender Josh Cook found the head of junior defender Alex Lippiatt deep in the box. Lippiatt's pass found an unmarked Rumleanschi on the far post, and the graduate student finished with a clean shot into the top right corner of the goal. Lippiatt and Cook both earned assists on the play, the first of the season for Lippiatt and second for Cook.
Sophomore forward Kysen Kroeger gave the Spartans a 2-1 lead in the 64th minute with his third goal of the season. Kroeger was able to collect a rebound off a shot from senior midfielder Matt Vatne that struck the crossbar, heading the ball past the Tartan goalkeeper into the top left corner of the goal. Vatne earned his team-leading sixth assist on the play.
Lippiatt scored a key insurance goal for CWRU just four minutes later. On a free kick from about 45 yards away, he sent a ball toward the box that was deflected off a defender's head and into the goal. It was Lippiatt's third goal of the season, and his first match with a goal and an assist this season.
The Tartans were able to score in the 89th minute on a scramble in the box following a free kick, but the Spartans kept the visitors off the board for the final two minutes to secure the win. CWRU outshot CMU 17-8 in the match, with Vatne tallying a team-high three shots.
Prior to the match, the Spartans celebrated five graduating members— Rumleanschi, senior defender Collin Hamilton, senior midfielder Adrian Harkness, senior goalkeeper Jackson Kallen, and senior defender/midfielder Rafael Perez—as part of a Senior Day ceremony.
