Mills' Season-High 25 Propels Spartans to 71-65 Win over Allegheny

Case Western Reserve University senior guard/forward Isabella Mills scored a season-high 25 points to help lead the Spartans to a 71-65 win over Allegheny College at Horsburgh Gymnasium in Cleveland on Saturday afternoon.

The Spartans improved to 6-2 for the fifth time in program history and the first time since the 2016-17 campaign. Allegheny dropped to 2-5 following the loss.

Mills finished the game shooting seven-of-19 overall, including five-of-11 from three-point range, and made six-of-seven free throws. She added six rebounds, three assists, and three steals. Junior guard Sarah Mitchell scored eight of her 13 points in the fourth quarter, adding six rebounds, three assists, and three steals, while first-year guard/forward Emily Plachta scored seven of her 13 in the final period, adding a pair of blocks and two steals.

Allegheny got off to a quick start on Saturday, leading by as many as nine points during the opening period on a three by Emily Lauer with 38 seconds left in the frame that gave the Gators an 18-9 lead heading into the second quarter. Allegheny led by as many as 11 points in the second quarter, and was ahead by 10, 31-21, with 3:39 to go in the half, but the Spartans closed out the period on a 9-0 run to get back within a point by the break. Junior forward Preet Gill scored all five of her first-half points during the run, including a three with 54 seconds left in the period that set the score at 31-30 heading into the locker room for halftime.

The Spartans battled back to take their first lead since the opening minutes of the game on a three by sophomore guard Lucy Vanderbeck that put CWRU in front 38-36 with 5:35 to play in the third. The teams continued to go back and forth for the remainder of the period and the game was tied at 48-48 heading into the fourth. With the game tied at 56-56 halfway through the final period, CWRU opened up a seven-point lead with a 9-2 run, capped off by a three from Plachta with 2:23 to go. The Spartans remained ahead for the remainder of the contest, with Plachta, Mills, and Gill each converting a pair of free throw attempts over the final 31 seconds of the game to keep the score out of reach and lock in the victory.

The Spartans finished the game with a 21-6 edge in points off turnovers, forcing the Gators to 18 turnovers during the game while committing just seven of their own. CWRU finished the game with 13 steals, the team's second-highest single-game total this year.

The Spartans will be back on the road next Friday, December 2, traveling to Kenyon College in Gambier, Ohio for a 7:00 p.m. tip-off.
