The Case Western Reserve University women's basketball team suffered its first loss of the 2022-23 campaign, falling to #12 Baldwin Wallace 81-58 in a non-conference game at Ursprung Gymnasium in Berea, Ohio on Monday night.

With their first loss, the Spartans fell to 3-1 on the season, while the Yellow Jackets improved to 2-0.

Senior guard/forward Isabella Mills led all scorers with 18 points and also filled the stat sheet with three rebounds, three assists, and three steals. Junior forward Kayla Characklis added 10 points and grabbed four rebounds, and junior guard Sarah Mitchell contributed nine points and four boards.

CWRU used a 9-0 run to take a 14-7 lead on a three-pointer by Mills with 4:33 remaining in the first quarter. A Mitchell free throw two minutes later put the Spartans ahead 17-13, but the Yellow Jackets would score the last four points of the quarter to tie the score heading into the second frame.

The hosts started the second quarter on a 10-0 run and did not relinquish the lead for the rest of the contest. A three-pointer from junior forward Preet Gill late in the third quarter ignited a 7-0 Case Western Reserve run that cut the deficit to five, 50-45, with two minutes left in the period. However, it was the closest the Spartans would get, as BW outscored CWRU 27-13 in the fourth quarter to secure the win.

The Spartans will look to bounce back this weekend, when the team travels to Wooster, Ohio for the Nan Nicholas Classic hosted by the College of Wooster. CWRU will face Alma on Saturday at 12 p.m. before taking on host Wooster the following day at 3:15 p.m.
