Led by a fifth place finish from sophomore Calvin Cai, the Case Western Reserve University wrestling team competed at the Bob Del Rosa Ohio Intercollegiate Open at the Veale Center in Cleveland, Ohio on Sunday against wrestlers from all three NCAA Divisions.
Cai was one of two Spartans to notch three wins during the invitational, reaching the fifth place match of the 165-pound first-year/sophomore draw. Cai started his day with a pin in 5:32 of Camren Foster from Toledo, his second fall of the season. He reached the semifinals of the draw with a 16-12 win by decision over Melvin Patterson. After falling in the semis and the consolation semis, Cai picked up his third win in the fifth place match.
First-year Thomas Wagner, competing in the 149-pound first-year/sophomore bracket, also won three matches and notched a team-leading two pins. He won by fall over Joshua Sam from RIT in 3:59 in his first match of the day before dropping a hard-fought 9-8 decision to Josh Howey in the second round. Wagner rebounded with a fall in 3:35 over Ohio Wesleyan's Luke Milanovich, the third of his season, and followed with a major decision (12-4) win over Carson Filer of Gannon. With a berth to the consolation semifinals on the line, Wagner lost by just one point, 8-7, to Evan Davis of Ashland.
First-years E.J. Alizio and Marty Landes each picked up two wins during competition, including an Alizio pin. Alizio, competing in the 125-pound first-year/sophomore bracket, pinned Johnathan Freebern of RIT in 5:44 to collect his first collegiate pin. Landes, wrestling at 157 pounds against first-years and sophomores, earned both of his wins by major decision.
Also earning pins for CWRU were first-year Art Martinez (141-pound open bracket) and first-year Ari Kefer (125-pound first-year/sophomore bracket). Martinez started his day with a fall in 4:54 over Michael Soupene, his third of the season, while Kefer pinned Chase Wolfingbarger in 1:21 for his third pin of the season.
Bob Del Rosa, the namesake of the invitational, served Case Western Reserve for 49 years with 46 seasons at the helm of the Spartan wrestling program. As a wrestling coach, he produced four national champions, 37 national qualifiers, 18 All-Americans, and 35 Scholar All-Americans. In 1996, Del Rosa was inducted into the NCAA Division III Wrestling Hall of Fame. He embodied all that was good in the profession of coaching, serving as a mentor and friend to countless student-athletes, coaches, and staff until his passing in 2011.
The Spartans will next head to Berea, Ohio on Saturday, November 19 for the Baldwin Wallace Invitational. Action is slated to begin at 10 a.m.
