Following 110 minutes of scoreless action, the #24 Case Western Reserve University men's soccer team did not win a penalty kick shootout with Muhlenberg College in the First Round of the 2022 NCAA Division III Men's Soccer Championship at Alston Parker Watt Field in Lexington, Virginia on the campus of Washington and Lee University on Saturday evening.

The Spartans ended the season with a record 10-3-4. The 10 wins are the most in the Head Coach Carter Poe era with the team making its first appearance in the NCAA Tournament since 2018 and fourth in program history. The Mules, who advanced to face #22 Washington and Lee on Sunday at 3 p.m. in the Second Round, now stand at 8-5-8 on the season.

Case Western Reserve outshot Muhlenberg 16-9 in the match, including a 3-1 advantage in overtime. Two of the team's three shots in extra time were on goal, including one in the 110th minute that required a leaping save by the Muhlenberg goalkeeper.

Senior goalkeeper Jackson Kallen saved three shots to secure his fourth shutout of the season and the ninth of his career. Junior midfielder Jacob Salmon led the Spartans with four shots, while sophomore forward Kysen Kroeger had a team-high two shots on goal.

In the shootout, graduate student defender Alexandru Rumleanschi, junior defender Josh Cook, senior midfielder Matt Vatne, and Kroeger all converted from the spot. However, Muhlenberg made all five of their penalty shots to advance to the Second Round.
