Men's Basketball Tops Dickinson to Win Sudeck Tournament Championship

Box Score

Case Western Reserve University senior forward Cole Frilling notched his third-straight double-double to start the campaign, leading the 19th-ranked Spartans to a 71-60 win over Dickinson on Saturday afternoon to claim the championship at the 2022 Bill Sudeck Tournament at Horsburgh Gymnasium.

The Spartans improved to 3-0 overall, while Dickinson dropped to 1-2 following the loss.

Frilling was named the Most Valuable Player of the Tournament after averaging 25.0 points and 10.0 rebounds over the two games. Graduate student guard Danny Frauenheim, who scored 16 points and dished out eight assists in Saturday's win, was also named to the All-Tournament Team.

Adding the first double-double of his career was junior Luke Thorburn, who totaled 16 points on eight-of-12 shooting from the floor and collected a career-high 11 rebounds.

The Spartans were able to overcome a rough shooting day (40.6% from the floor and 15.4% from three-point range) by outrebounding the Red Devils 46-31 and holding a 42-24 edge in points in the paint and a 16-7 edge in points off turnovers.

No team held more than a three-point advantage in the first half as the Spartans ended the opening frame with a 28-27 lead. Down 35-32 with 16:47 left in the second half, CWRU went on an 8-0 run to take the lead in the contest and would never trail again. The Spartans led by as many as 11 points, taking a 55-44 lead with 6:06 to play after a pair of free throws by Frilling, and would stay ahead by at least six points the remainder of the game.

Martin Mann, who finished the game with 14 points and 10 rebounds for Dickinson, was also named to the All-Tournament Team, along with Allegheny's Caden Hinckley and Oberlin's Yuuki Okubo.

CWRU will be back in action on Wednesday, wrapping up a four-game home stand to start the campaign with a 7:00 p.m. contest against La Roche at Horsburgh Gymnasium.
