Box Score An 89th-minute goal from sophomore forward Kysen Kroeger gave the Case Western Reserve University men's soccer team a 2-1 come-from-behind win over New York University on Saturday evening at Gaelic Park in The Bronx, New York.
With the win, the Spartans improved to 6-2-2 overall and 2-0-0 in University Athletic Association play. The Violets fell to 5-4-1 on the season and 1-1-0 in conference contests.
With under two minutes remaining in the contest, senior midfielder Matt Vatne dribbled up the far side of the field into the 18-yard box. After beating two defenders, he approached the Violet goalkeeper who deflected the ball toward Kroeger. The sophomore forward fired the ball past an NYU defender and into the back of the empty net for the game winner. The goal was the second of the season for Kroeger, and Vatne earned his team-leading fifth assist of the campaign.
The Violets led at halftime 1-0, scoring in the 35th minute with a goal from Bryce Lexow.
Early in the second half, Vatne tied the score at 1 with a goal on a penalty kick, his team-leading sixth goal of the season. It was the first CWRU goal on a penalty kick in 2022 and Vatne's first career penalty kick goal. In both of the Spartans' UAA contests, Vatne has recorded a goal and an assist, giving him a conference-leading six points in UAA play.
Senior goalkeeper Jackson Kallen earned the win in goal, saving three shots. NYU outshot CWRU 10-3, but all three of the Spartans' shots were on target.
Case Western Reserve will continue with conference play next weekend, traveling to St. Louis to face WashU on Friday night before heading to Chicago to face the University of Chicago on Sunday afternoon.
