Box Score The Case Western Reserve University men's soccer team defeated Emory University 1-0 in the team's penultimate University Athletic Association match of the season on Sunday morning at DiSanto Field in Cleveland, Ohio. With the win, the Spartans remained in second place in the UAA standings and have a chance to claim a co-championship next week.
CWRU improved to 9-3-3 overall and 4-1-1 in conference play. With a Case Western Reserve win on Saturday, November 5 in the final match of the regular season and a loss by #1 Chicago (5-0-1 UAA) to WashU, the Spartans and Maroons would share the conference championship. Chicago has already clinched at least a share of the title and the conference's automatic bid to the NCAA postseason. With the loss, the Eagles fell to 5-8-4 overall and 1-5-0 in UAA matches.
Junior midfielder Jacob Salmon broke the scoreless tie in the 61st minute, scoring his third goal of the season on a give-and-go with sophomore midfielder Lukas Dalakis. Salmon passed a leading ball to Dalakis on the near side of the box. Dalakis quickly passed the ball back to an unmarked Salmon in the center of the box, and the junior shot the ball past the diving goalkeeper into the bottom left corner of the goal. Dalakis earned his fourth assist of the season on the play.
Emory earned a corner kick in the 88th minute following a blocked shot, but their final attempt on goal of the match sailed high over the net. The Spartans preserved the shutout for the remainder of the match, attempting three shots in the last two minute, and secured the shutout.
In the scoreless first half, the best chance for the Spartans came between the 30th and 32nd minutes when the team earned five corner kicks in succession. On the corner kicks, senior midfielder Matt Vatne fired two shots, one of which was saved, and the other blocked, and junior midfielder Ryan Doughty had a shot that went high.
The best chance for the Eagles in the first half came in the 42nd minute when an open shot by William Knight hit the crossbar, and CWRU corralled the rebound.
Senior goalkeeper Jackson Kallen saved three shots in the match and earned his third shutout of the season, lowering his goals against average to 0.83 in conference play. Offensively, Case Western Reserve outshot Emory 14-9 with a 6-3 advantage in shots on goal. Vatne and sophomore forward Kysen Kroeger each had a match-high three shots.
The Spartans will end the regular season at home on Saturday with a match against archrival Carnegie Mellon at 1 p.m. CWRU will be honoring five graduating members of its team—Kallen, senior defender Collin Hamilton, senior midfielder Adrian Harkness, graduate student defender Alexandru Rumleanschi, and senior defender/midfielder Rafael Perez—prior to the match as part of Senior Day.
