Box Score The Case Western Reserve University men's soccer team dropped its last road match of the season on Sunday afternoon, falling to #1 University of Chicago 2-1 at Stagg Field in Chicago, Illinois.
The Spartans fell to 6-3-3 overall and 2-1-1 in the University Athletic Association, while the Maroons improved to 14-0-0 on the season and 4-0-0 in conference play. Case Western Reserve fell into a tie for third place in the conference standings with seven points, one behind second place WashU and five behind Chicago. There are three remaining matches in conference play.
For the third consecutive match, CWRU played from behind, conceding a goal in the seventh minute to Chicago. Kai Walsh scored his fourth goal of the season with an assist from Tanner Baldwin.
Throughout the first half, the Spartans pressured the Maroons, outshooting the hosts 4-3, but could not find an equalizer.
Chicago added to its lead in the 77th minute with a goal by Alex Lee.
Senior midfielder Matt Vatne scored with 34 seconds remaining in the contest to cut into the deficit. He received the ball outside the box, and used a spin move to dribble around a defender. After taking another step, he fired low and beyond the reach of the Maroon goalkeeper to put the Spartans on the board. It was Vatne's team-leading seventh goal of the season and his third in conference play.
With less than a minute left in the match, the Spartans were unable to complete the comeback.
Senior goalkeeper Jackson Kallen recorded five saves, and junior midfielder Jacob Salmon had a team-high three shots.
With a break in the UAA schedule, CWRU will have its final non-conference match of the season on Saturday, welcoming Asbury University to DiSanto Field at 7 p.m. to start a four-match season-ending homestand. Case Western Reserve has not lost at home so far this season, going 3-0-1 in Cleveland.
