Four Spartans Score in Men's Soccer Victory over Hiram

Box Score

Four members of the Case Western Reserve University men's soccer team scored in the team's 5-0 win over Hiram College on Tuesday evening in Cleveland, Ohio.

The team's five goals are the most since an 8-1 victory over Adrian College on September 22, 2018.

The Spartans improved to 3-0 on the season, while the Terriers dropped to 1-1-1.

Senior forward Jacob Hall broke the scoreless in the 4th minute of play with his first goal of the season. Junior midfielder Matt Vatne dribbled down the left side of the box and crossed it into the middle as Hall finished in the top right of the goal.

The Spartans added to their lead in the 19th when sophomore midfielder Caleb Tan crossed the ball into the middle of the box and sophomore defender Alex Lippiatt headed the ball into the back of the net for his first goal of the season.

Just over four minutes later in the 23rd minute of action, Hall found the back of the net for his second goal of the game. Sophomore midfielder Austin Zeleznik placed a perfect cross into the middle box as Hall headed the ball past the goalkeepers' reach.

In the second half, Vatne scored a goal of his own in the 48th minute when he intercepted a pass and laced a shot into the top right of the goal. The goal was Vatne's first of the season.

Zeleznik closed out the Spartans' scoring in the 62nd minute, as he recovered a shot from senior midfielder Henry Barnes and tapped it into the back of the net for his goal of the season. Barnes was credited with the assist, his first of the season.

With their third straight shutout to start the season, the Spartans have now gone a little over 286 minutes without conceding a goal. The entire defense and midfield controlled possession and kept the ball on the attacking side of the field, barely giving the Terriers a chance to shoot.

Graduate student Seldon Magruder led the team with seven shots, while Lippiat, Zeleznik, Vatne, senior Peter Dernelle, and sophomore Jacob Salmon each tallied three shots.

Case Western Reserve will look to keep scoring as they travel to Westerville, Ohio to take on Otterbein University in their first road match of the season on Saturday, September 11th. Kickoff is scheduled for 7:00 p.m.
