Box Score The Case Western Reserve University women's soccer team traveled to Westerville, Ohio on Saturday evening and defeated Otterbein University in a hard-fought non-conference matchup.
The victory improved the Spartans' to 2-0 on the season, while the Cardinals dropped to 0-1 with the loss.
In the first half, Otterbein got out to the early lead as Anjuli Anderson found the back of the net via an assist from Morgan Somers in the 23rd minute of action. CWRU quickly responded to even the score at 1-1 when senior midfielder Anika Washburn scored her first goal of the season off an assist from first-year forward Carolyn Koutures. The assist was Koutures' first of her career.
The score was tied for the remainder of the first half as the Spartans held the advantage in shots (7-1) and corner kicks (1-0).
Following halftime, CWRU claimed their first lead of the game at the 50:14 mark as Washburn scored her second goal of the game to give the Spartans a 2-1 advantage. The goal was Washburn's 18th of her career.
Otterbein was able to even the score at 2-2 after a goal by Delaney Earl at the 71:13 mark. However, CWRU did not waste any time in reclaiming their lead as junior forward Ella Copich scored the eventual game-winning goal less than a minute later at the 72:01 mark. The goal was Copich's first of the season and third of her career.
The Spartans finished the game with a 12-5 advantage in shots. Washburn led the team with three shots, all of which were on goal. Senior midfielder Molly Whelan and senior forward Christina Hickson each totaled two shots throughout the match.
Sophomore Maggie Storti played all 90 minutes in net as she finished the game with two saves. She improved to 2-0 on the season.
Case Western Reserve will now travel back to Cleveland for their home-opener on Wednesday, September 8th when they host Adrian College at DiSanto Field. Kickoff is at 7:30 p.m.
