Box Score Case Western Reserve University senior midfielder Henry Barnes broke a scoreless tie in the 107th minute on Saturday afternoon, scoring the game-winning 'golden goal' in the second overtime period to lift the Spartans to a 1-0 win over Fredonia State at DiSanto Field in Cleveland, Ohio.
The Spartans improved to 2-0-0 on the season with the win, while Fredonia dropped to 1-1-0 with the loss.
Barnes' goal, his second through as many games this season, came off a team effort in the waning minutes of the contest. Senior midfielder Peter Dernelle began the attack by launching a long pass that found the feet of sophomore defender Jad Oglesby on the near wing. Oglesby then passed off to sophomore Austin Zeleznik inside the 18-yard box, who crossed the ball across the front of the net. Barnes charged onto the ball inside the six-yard box and finished past the keeper for the game-winning goal.
The goal cemented a victory for the Spartans' defense, which turned in a stellar effort on Saturday. The backline yielded just two shots (one on goal) during the entire contest, both coming in the final five minutes of the first half. Junior goalkeeper Jackson Kallen turned aside the only shot on goal of the day to notch his second-straight shutout and improve to 2-0-0 on the campaign. CWRU's defense has not allowed a goal through 196 minutes and 42 seconds of play this season.
Meanwhile, the Spartans' attack remained active throughout the game despite not finding the back of the net until extra time. CWRU totaled 18 shots in the contest, including seven on goal. Sixteen of the team's shots came in the second half or later, including six during the first overtime period.
Barnes and senior Seldon Magruder each led the squad with five shots, with Magruder registering a team-leading three shots on goal. CWRU also held a 6-2 edge in corner kicks over the Blue Devils on Saturday.
Case Western Reserve will wrap-up its season-opening three-game home stand on Tuesday, September 7 at DiSanto Field against Hiram College. The game is slated for a 7:00 p.m. start.
