#10 Spartans Extend Win Streak with 7-0 Victory over John Carroll

The 10th-ranked Case Western Reserve University women's soccer team notched their seventh consecutive win to start the 2021 season, defeating John Carroll University 7-0 at DiSanto Field on Thursday evening. The win improves the Spartans record to 7-0-0 with the Blue Streaks dropping to 4-3-1.

CWRU has recorded a stretch of 21-straight non-conference games without a loss, with the team posting a record of 20-0-1 during the streak, which dates back to October 2, 2018. The Spartans have won 20-straight non-conference regular season games.

In addition, the team's seven goals are the most since an 8-0 victory over Fredonia State on September 1, 2019.

Senior midfielder Anika Washburn recorded the hat-trick, while also notching an assist during the game. Senior forward Christina Hickson added a two-goal game, while senior midfielder Greta Lazzara and first-year midfielder Sophia Stellabotte netted the other goals.

The game was scoreless throughout the first half, as the Spartans held a 21-1 advantage in shots.

CWRU came out firing to begin the second half, as first-year midfielder Sydney Schenk found Lazarra at the top of the box and Lazarra hit the top right corner of the goal for her first score of the season at 48:12 mark.

The Spartans kept attacking and scored another goal just over a minute later. Washburn dribbled up the middle of the field and laced a shot to the lower left of the goal. The goal was her first of the game and fifth on the season.

Washburn scored her second goal of the match in the 54th minute. She collected a blocked shot from junior midfielder Helina VanBibber and shot the ball to the lower left of the goal. VanBibber was credited with the assist.

The Spartans continued their scoring in the 69th minute on a solid strike from Stellabotte, after she received the ball on a cross from junior forward Aniya Hartzler. The goal was Stellabotte's first of her career. Washburn then found Hickson for her fifth goal of the season in the 77th minute. Hickson scored her second goal of the game and sixth of the season in the 88th minute via an assist from junior defender Laura Gorjanc, and Washburn finished the scoring with her third goal of the game and seventh on the season at the 89:47 mark. Sophomore defender Grace Bratter was credited with the assist on Washburn's goal.

Sophomore Maggie Storti started and played a little over 61 minutes in goal for Case Western Reserve. She improved to 7-0-0 on the season. Sophomore Sydney Stone appeared for the final 28 minutes of action in net, as she made one save. Overall, the Spartans' backfield allowed just two shots all game.

Case Western Reserve continues their brief two-game homestand on Saturday, September 25th when the team welcomes Muskingum University to DiSanto Field. Kickoff is scheduled for 1:30 p.m.
