CWRU Offense Comes Alive in 6-1 Win over Westminster

Box Score

The Case Western Reserve University men's soccer team struck for a season-high six goals, as the Spartans topped the Westminster College Titans 6-1 at DiSanto Field in Cleveland, Ohio on Tuesday night.

With the win, the Spartans improved to 4-2-1 overall, while Westminster dropped to 3-5-0 following the loss.

Leading the attack for the Spartans were junior Matt Vatne, who registered a pair of second-half goals, sophomore Jad Oglesby, who notched the first goal of his career and assisted on two others, sophomore Alex Lippiatt, who finished with a goal and an assist, and sophomore Austin Zeleznik, who added two assists as well to increase his team-leading total to five this season.

The six goals scored in the game were the most by the Spartans since winning 8-1 over Adrian on September 22, 2018.

The Spartans fell behind early on a goal by Westminster's Tyler Caterino in the sixth minute, but CWRU was able to quickly respond, finishing the game with six unanswered goals. Senior Henry Barnes evened the score with his third goal of the season, heading in a long cross from Zeleznik in the 10th minute of play. The score remained knotted until the 26:00 mark, when Oglesby gave the Spartans the lead, punching in a rebound off his own shot that was redirected his way by Zeleznik.

CWRU continued to add onto its lead, as graduate student Seldon Magruder headed in an assist from Oglesby in the 35th minute for his first goal of the year, and Lippiatt punched in a header of his own off a cross from Oglesby 37th minute for his second goal of the campaign, giving the Spartans a 4-1 advantage heading into the halftime break.

Vatne added both of his goals early in the second half to help the Spartans' lock up the victory. He struck for the first goal of the game and his second of the season in the 48th minute off an assist from Lippiatt, and then added an unassisted goal, his third of the campaign, in the 61st minute.

CWRU outshot Westminster 22-5 in the game, including a 9-2 edge in shots on goal, and held an 8-2 advantage in corner kicks. First-year goalkeeper Sam Rojanasakdakul made one save over his 90 minutes between the pipes, and earned his first collegiate win in the contest to improve to 1-1-1 on the year.

Case Western Reserve will be back in action on Saturday, September 25, traveling to face Capital University in Columbus, Ohio. The game is slated for a 7:00 p.m. start.
