Box Score With a goal from senior forward Christina Hickson and a shutout from sophomore goalkeeper Maggie Storti, the Case Western Reserve University women's soccer team prevailed in its first game of the season, defeating Capital University 1-0 in Columbus, Ohio on Wednesday night.
After a scoreless first half in which the Spartans tallied nine shots, Hickson broke the deadlock in the 55th minute. She received a pass from senior midfielder Anika Washburn inside the box and beat the Crusaders' goalkeeper with a shot to the lower left of goal. It was Hickson's 15th career goal and first of the season. Washburn tallied her sixth career assist on the play and her first of the season.
Storti played all 90 minutes in goal and saved two shots to post her first career shutout.
CWRU recorded 16 shots in the match, and Washburn led the Spartans with four. First-year forward Ashley Jacobs added three shots, all of which were on goal. On the attack for most of the match, Case Western Reserve held a 9-3 advantage in corner kicks.
Case Western Reserve will return to action this weekend when the team travels to Westerville, Ohio on Saturday to face Otterbein University. Kickoff is scheduled for 5:30 p.m.
