Box Score The Case Western Reserve University men's soccer team opened the 2021 season with a 2-0 win over Marietta College on Wednesday night at DiSanto Field in Cleveland, Ohio.
The win was the first for head coach Carter Poe at Case Western Reserve.
The Spartans got on the board at the 14:28 mark of the first half, when sophomore defender Josh Cook gathered a rebound and laced a shot from the left corner of the box that found the top right corner of the net. The goal was his first of the season and first of his career.
Less than two minutes later, CWRU once again found the back as senior midfielder Henry Barnes received a perfectly executed corner kick from sophomore Austin Zeleznik and tapped the ball into the net to give the Spartans a 2-0 lead at the 16:01 mark. The goal was Barnes' first of the season and first of his career.
The CWRU defense would hold strong for the remained of the game, as the Spartans secured the 2-0 shutout victory.
Junior Jackson Kallen kept the clean sheet and made three saves in the match. He earned his first win of the season and fourth of his career. Sophomores Jad Oglesby, Alex Lippiatt and Cook and first-year Sawyer Dockal played the whole match on the backline and kept the shutout.
Overall, the Spartans outshout the Pioneers 12-10, with six shots on goal, and attempted eight corner kicks to Marietta's four.
Case Western Reserve will now prepare to host SUNY Fredonia on Saturday, September 4. Kickoff is scheduled for 3:00 p.m. at DiSanto Field.
