Track & Field Opens Outdoor Season at Oberlin

The Case Western Reserve University men's and women's track and field teams competed in their first outdoor meet of the season on Saturday, as they traveled to Oberlin, Ohio for a dual meet against Oberlin College at the Bob Kahn Track & Field Complex.

While the meet was not scored, it didn't prevent the men and women from turning in many strong performances.

On the men's side, juniors Logan Singer and Ben Brisman each won two individual events. Singer took first place in the 1,500-meter run with a time of 4:11.70 and claimed the title in the 800-meter run with a time of 1:58.48. Brisman won the discus throw with a mark of 34.97 meters and the hammer throw with a toss of 43.03 meters.

Five other male Spartans claimed first place finishes at the meet, while the men's 4x400-meter relay team of graduate student Jonathan Haling, junior Juan Perez, sophomore Eli Fragnoli and first-year Sam Hubbard won the event with a time of 3:36.11.

In the field events, first-year Yusuf Shaaban finished first in the high jump with a mark of 1.77 meters, while sophomore Ben Pinkowski won the long jump (6.22m) and sophomore Keith Cartwright won the javelin (42.90m). On the track, Perez finished first in the 400-meter run with a time of 50.26 and sophomore Jack Begley placed first in the 5,00-meter run with a time of 14:59.23.

For the women, senior Julie Hines and first-year Adrienne Wachtman each won two individual events on Saturday. Hines claimed titles in the 400-meter run (1:01.32) and the 200-meter dash (27.20), while Wachtman claimed first-place in the discus (38.18m) and the javelin (36.41m). Her mark's in both the discus and javelin currently rank fourth-best in program history.

Other individual first-place finishes for the Spartan women came from first-year Cecelia Zielke in the 5,000-meter run (18:07.32) and sophomore Shelby Cooper in the pole vault (2.75m).

The women were also strong in the relay events on Saturday. The 4x100-meter relay team of Hines, and first-year Anna Zinsser, Elise Moore and Emily Hopkins finished first in the event with a time 51.35, while Zinsser and Moore also teamed with junior Grace Bentley and sophomore Mia Kilroy in the 4x400-meter relay to place first with a time of 4:24.92.

The track and field team will next travel to Springfield, Ohio for a dual meet against Wittenberg University on Saturday, April 24.
