Box Score Four different Spartans scored on Wednesday night, as the Case Western Reserve University women's soccer team rolled to a 5-2 win at Franciscan University in Steubenville, Ohio.
The Spartans improved to 1-0 overall for the spring campaign, while the Barons dropped to 2-3.
Junior midfielder Anika Washburn started the scoring with a goal via an assist from sophomore forward Maia Sethi at the 22:18 mark of the first half. Sophomore midfielder Johanna Dunkers then extended the lead just 41 seconds later with a goal off an assist from junior forward Brianna Van Zanten.
Franciscan cut the Spartan lead to 2-1 just before halftime, as Juliana Rubino found the back of the net at the 41:36 mark.
After some back and forth play early in the second half, the Spartans increased their lead to 3-1 when sophomore forward Aniya Hartzler converted a penalty kick at the 60:26 mark. A little over a minute later, the Barons responded with Rubino's second goal of the game to make it a 3-2 score.
CWRU added to their lead at the 68:33 mark when Washburn scored her second goal of the game, after she received a pass from Van Zanten and laced a ball to the top left corner of the net. The Spartans wrapped up their scoring in the 82nd minute when Van Zanten found the back of the net for an unassisted goal.
The Spartans outshot the Barons 23-8 in the contest, with a 13-7 advantage in shots on goal.
Washburn led the team with six shots, including four shots on goal. First-year goalkeeper Maggie Storti allowed two goals and made five saves during her 90 minutes of action. She earned her first win of the season.
After two weeks off from competition, Case Western Reserve will return to action on Wednesday, April 14th as they travel to Delaware, Ohio for a match against Ohio Wesleyan University. Kickoff is scheduled for 7:00 p.m.
