Box Score The Case Western Reserve University women's basketball team suffered a 77-65 loss at eighth-ranked John Carroll University on Friday night in University Heights, Ohio.
The loss dropped CWRU to 0-2 on the year, while John Carroll improved to 1-0.
Senior guard/ forward Abbey Lawrence led all Spartans on Friday night with 21 points, including 12-of-15 from the free throw line. She added a team-best eight rebounds and an assist for the Spartans. Junior guard/forward Isabella Mills added 11 points and a career-high seven steals, while sophomore guard Margaret Terry chipped in 10 points for CWRU.
John Carroll came out shooting hot on Friday, hitting 66.7% of their shots from the floor in the opening quarter, including two-of-two from behind the three-point line. The Blue Streaks never trailed in the game, as they took a 48-28 lead into halftime.
CWRU would be able to cut the deficit to 61-47 by the end of the third quarter as the Spartans ended the quarter on an 8-0 run that was capped off by a layup from Terry. CWRU continued to attack as they started the fourth quarter with a layup from sophomore guard Sarah Mitchell and a three-pointer from first-year guard/ forward Lucy Vanderbeck that cut the Blue Streak lead to single digits at 62-53.
After a few possessions of trading baskets, the Spartans got within seven points as Lawrence knocked down a pair of free throws to put the score at 65-58. However, John Carroll maintained their lead during the final frame and regained their double-digit advantage.
The Spartans finished the game shooting 34.3% from the floor, but could not keep pace with the Blue Streaks attack, which ended the contest with four three pointers on eight attempts (50.0%) and a 46.7 overall field goal percentage. Olivia Nagy finished with a team-high 17 points, while Nicole Heffington notched a double-double with 11 points and 11 rebounds.
Case Western will conclude play at the John Carroll University Tip Off Tournament on Saturday against Heidelberg University at 1:00 p.m
