#10 Women's Soccer Upends #25 Brandeis behind Van Zanten's Game Winning Goal

Box Score

Case Western Reserve University senior forward Brianna Van Zanten scored the game-winning goal in the 48th minute of play to give the 10th-ranked Spartans a 2-1 win over 25th-ranked Brandeis University at Gordon Field on Saturday afternoon, increasing CWRU's win streak to 11 games.

With the win, the Spartans improved to 11-0-0 and 2-0-0 in the University Athletic Association on the season, while the Judges fell to 5-3-2 and 0-2-0 in the UAA.

Van Zanten's game winner, her third goal of the season, came at the 47:58 mark of play. She received a pass from senior midfielder Anika Washburn and shot the ball past the Brandeis goalkeeper into the back of the net. It was Washburn's fifth assist this season.

CWRU opened the scoring in the first half, as junior defender Laura Gorjanc sent a ball from the left side of the field into the middle of the box in the 29th minute. First-year forward Carolyn Koutures was there to head the ball over the goalkeepers' reach to give the Spartans a 1-0 advantage. The goal was Koutures' first of the season, while the assist was Gorjanc's second of the season.

Brandeis would even the score late in the first half on a goal from Yasla Ngoma at the 44:29 mark. Ngoma received a pass from Caroline Swan and tapped it in. The goal was Ngoma's fifth of the campaign.

CWRU finished the game with just two shots, both on goal. Brandeis held the advantage in shots (17-2) and corner kicks (4-1) throughout the match.

Sophomore Maggie Storti led the Spartan defense, collecting her 11th win (11-0-0, 2-0-0 UAA) as she made a season-high nine saves. Gorjanc, senior Kat Rebele, senior Greta Lazzara and junior Merry Meyer were the starters on the backline, as they held the Judges' attack to just one goal.

Case Western Reserve will be back in action on Friday, October 15th, when the team heads to Atlanta, Georgia to play the Emory University for a 5:00 p.m. matchup with the Eagles.
