Box Score The Case Western Reserve University men's soccer team suffered a 2-0 loss to seventh-ranked Washington University (Mo.) on 'Senior Day' at DiSanto Field in Cleveland, Ohio on Sunday afternoon.
The loss dropped the Spartans to 6-7-2 overall on the season, including a 1-4-1 mark in University Athletic Association games, while the Bears improved to 11-2-1 overall and to 4-1-1 in the UAA following the win.
A defensive miscue in the 34th minute of the game cost the Spartans and led to the Bears' first goal of the game. WashU's Owen Culver intercepted a pass in the attacking third, and was able to quickly launch a shot into the net for his seventh goal of the season.
The Bears increased their lead to 2-0 on Armando Sanchez Conde's fourth goal of the season, coming off a shot from approximately 30 yards out in the 60th minute.
Despite taking the loss in the game, junior goalkeeper Jackson Kallen finished the game with five saves of his 90 minutes in the net. Senior forward Jacob Hall registered a team-high two shots, including one of two shots on goal for CWRU in the game.
Prior to the start of Sunday's game, the Spartans honored their six graduating team members with a special 'Senior Day' ceremony. The six players – midfielder Sean Atwater, midfielder Henry Barnes, midfielder Peter Dernelle, goalkeeper and student coach Jakob Dunn, Hall and forward Seldon Magruder – have helped the team win 28 games since their inaugural season in 2018. Included in their success was a 16-win campaign and a trip to the NCAA Quarterfinals during the 2018, the best finish in the program's history.
The Spartans will look to finish their 2021 season on a positive note, when the team travels to Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania to face Carnegie Mellon University at 1:30 p.m.
