Late Goal Costs Spartans in 2-1 Loss to #14 Chicago

Box Score

The Case Western Reserve University men's soccer team battled the 14th-ranked University of Chicago throughout the night on Friday, but a late goal by the Maroons proved to be the difference maker in a 2-1 setback for the Spartans at DiSanto Field in Cleveland, Ohio.

The loss dropped the Spartans to 6-6-2 overall on the season including a 1-3-1 record in University Athletic Association matches, while Chicago raised its record to 11-4-1 overall with a 3-2-0 conference mark.

After a scoreless first half, Chicago broke the tie in the 60th minute of play on Richard Gillespie's third goal of the season off a corner kick by Lyndon Hu that was redirected to Gillespie by Naz Kabbani.

The Spartans evened the score in the 78th minute. Junior midfielder Matt Vatne sent a corner kick into the six-yard box that senior midfielder Henry Barnes headed down to the feet of sophomore midfielder Jacob Salmon. Salmon would finish with a shot into the back of the net for the first goal of his collegiate career. Vatne earned his fourth assist of the season on the goal, while Barnes picked up his second.

However, Chicago would regain the lead in the 85th minute on a long-range shot by Vicente Mateus that found the goal for his first score of the season.

The Spartans finished the game with an 11-9 edge in total shots, including a 9-6 advantage in the second half, and 5-3 bump in shots on goal. First-year midfielder Lukas Dalakis led the team with four total shots and two shots on goal, including one in the 72nd minute that was cleared off the line by a Chicago defender.

CWRU junior goalkeeper Jackson Kallen made one save in the loss, dropping to 4-5-1 on the year.

The Spartans will be back in action on Sunday, October 31 against the seventh-ranked Washington University (Mo.) Bears in the team's final home game of the 2021 regular season. The game is scheduled for a 1:30 p.m. start, with a special 'Senior Day' ceremony to honor the team's graduating players scheduled prior to the start of the game.
