Box Score Case Western Reserve University senior Brianna Van Zanten broke a scoreless tie with a goal in the 87th minute, and junior Merry Meyer cemented the win with a goal of her own less than 90 seconds later, leading the Spartans to a 2-0 win at Ohio Wesleyan University in Delaware, Ohio on Saturday afternoon.
The Spartans improved to 12-1-1 with the win, and will finish the 2021 regular season with a perfect 10-0-0 mark in non-conference games. CWRU has won 24-straight non-conference regular season matches and has gone undefeated in its last 25 non-conference matches including NCAA tournament play.
Ohio Wesleyan, which was featured along with the Spartans in the first NCAA regional rankings released last week, dropped to 8-4-4 following the loss.
The two teams played to a scoreless first half, as the Spartans controlled the pace most of the half, holding the 11-4 advantage in shots.
After a goalless first half, Van Zanten finally pushed CWRU ahead in the 87th minute with her fourth goal of the season. Less than 90 seconds later, Meyer solidified the victory with her first goal of the season at the 87:43 mark.
The Spartans outshot the Battling Bishops 26-9 and 17 shots on goal to OWU's five.
Sophomore Maggie Storti led the Spartan defense collecting her 12th win (12-1-1) and her sixth clean sheet of the season with five saves during the match. Meyer, and seniors Greta Lazzara and Kat Rebele played all 90 minutes on the CWRU backline.
With the team's non-conference schedule now complete, the Spartans will turn their attention to three University Athletic Association to end the regular season. Case Western Reserve will welcome the 13th-ranked University of Chicago to DiSanto Field for 'Senior Night' on Friday, October 29 at 5:00 p.m.
