Men's Soccer Drops Overtime Match against Carthage

Box Score

The Case Western Reserve University men's soccer team dropped a neutral site match against Carthage College in double overtime, 3-2, on Friday afternoon in South Bend, Indiana.

The loss brings the Spartans to 6-5-2 overall this season, while the Firebirds improve to 10-5-2 on the campaign.

The two teams battled back and forth in the first half, until Carthage committed a foul in the box that gave CWRU a penalty kick opportunity. Graduate student forward Seldon Magruder converted the penalty kick at the 43:59 mark to give the Spartans a 1-0 lead. The goal was his third of the campaign and 23rd of his career.

CWRU maintained a 1-0 advantage until the 73rd minute when Carthage's Aidan Crowder evened the score at 1-1 with his third goal of the season.

The Spartans reclaimed the lead just over a minute later at the 73:36 mark when first-year midfielder Lukas Dalakis received a ball from sophomore midfielder Jacob Salmon and scored to put CWRU up 2-1 late in the second half. The goal was Dalakis' first of the season, while the assist was Salmon's first of the campaign.

Then in the 87th minute, Carthage's Nick Renfro tied the match again with an assist from Mickey Reilly. It was Renfro's first goal of the season and Reilly's seventh assist of the year.

The score remained 2-2 after regulation and the first overtime period, sending the game into the second 10:00 overtime period. In the 106th minute of total play time, the Firebirds took their first and only lead of the game and the win with an unassisted goal by Reilly.

Senior Jacob Hall registered a team-leading five shots, with two shots on goal. CWRU finished the game with 20-16 in shots, and 6-5 advantage in shots on goal. Junior goalkeeper Jackson Kallen went the distance and made two saves throughout the match.

Case Western Reserve will now return to University Athletic Association play with a pair of home matches on Friday, October 29th against the 16th-ranked University of Chicago at 7:30 p.m. and a Sunday afternoon game at 1:30 p.m. against eighth-ranked Washington (Mo.)
