Box Score After a hard-fought 110 minutes of play, the Case Western Reserve University men's soccer team tied 15th-ranked Emory University on Friday night at the Woodruff P.E. Center Soccer Field in two overtimes.
CWRU now sits at 6-3-2 overall with a 1-1-1 record in the University Athletic Association, while Emory sits at 6-1-4 overall and 1-0-2 in the UAA.
The Eagles were first to find the back of the net in the 31st minute of play when junior Alejandro Gomez scored his second goal of the season to give Emory an early 1-0 edge.
The Spartans evened the game at 1-1 when graduate student forward Seldon Magruder received a free kick from first-year forward Brandon Kim at the 43:40 mark and headed it into the back of the net. The goal was Magruder's second of the season, while the assist was Kim's first of the season. The game remained knotted at 1-1 throughout the remainder of the half.
CWRU continued to force on the attack in the second half and claimed their first lead of the game in the 54th minute. Sophomore defender Alex Lippiatt dribbled down the left side of the field and laced a shot from the top left corner of the box to give the Spartans a 2-1 lead. The goal was Lippiatt's third of the season.
Then, in the 61st minute, Emory senior defender Josh Berman tied the match with an assist from Gomez. It was Berman's second goal of the season and Gomez' second assist of the year.
Neither team could find a 'golden goal' in overtime, despite a combined 11 shots in the final 20 minutes, as the match ended in a draw.
Junior goalkeeper Jackson Kallen posted a season-high seven saves throughout the contest and faced 22 Emory shots. Lippiatt and sophomore midfielder Austin Zeleznik each led CWRU with three total shots and two shots on goal. Throughout the physical match, the teams combined for 29 fouls.
Case Western Reserve will continue its conference road-trip on Sunday afternoon when the Spartans play against the University of Rochester (N.Y.) at 1:30 p.m.
