Case Western Reserve University sophomore Logan Singer and first-year Mia Vargo led the Spartans during the second day of the 2020 University Athletic Association Indoor Track & Field Championships hosted by New York University in New York, New York.
The Spartan men finished sixth out of seven teams at the meet scoring 58 points during the two day of competition. Washington (Mo.) won the conference title for the men with 201 points, and were followed in the standings by Chicago (115) and Carnegie Mellon (78). The CWRU women finished seventh in the team standings with 41.5 points. WashU won the conference title for the women with 168 points, followed by Chicago (161.33) and Emory (96.33).
Singer finished second in the mile run with a new school record time of 4:13.03. That time bests the previous school record of 4:18.26 set by former Spartan Chris Kelly in 2011. Mia Vargo also added an All-UAA honor by placing second in the high jump with a mark of 1.64 meters.
Other scoring performances for the Spartan men came from sophomore Juan Perez in the 60-meter dash (sixth, 7.14) and the 200-meter dash (sixth, 22.53), senior Jonathan Haling in the 400-meter dash (fourth, 49.84), junior Trey Razanauskas in the 3,000-meter run (fourth, 8:35.45), senior Brian Holden in the shot put (sixth, 13.23m), first-year Eli Fragnoli in the 60-meter hurdles (sixth, 8.65) and senior David Hall in the 3,000-meter run (seventh,8:40.63).
In addition, the men's 4x400-meter relay team of Haling, senior Dominic Oddo, senior Michael Hradesky and first-year Keith Roberts finished fifth in the event with a time of 3:23.17.
The women's 4x400-meter relay team of first-year Mia Kilroy, first-year Kemi Ogundiran, first-year Melissa Phung and junior Julie Hines added a sixth-place finish in the event with a time of 4:02.99.
Other scoring performances for the Spartan women came from sophomore Eleanor Gaddy in the shot put (fourth, 11.33m), junior Taylor Jackson in the shot put (fifth, 11.22m), senior Bailey Flint in the high jump (sixth, 1.50m) and Hines in 400-meter dash (seventh, 59.81).
Altogether, the Spartans accumulated five All-UAA honors during the meet, including the UAA Championship from Jackson in the weight throw.
With the Indoor UAA Championships now behind them, the Spartans will turn their focus towards qualification for the 2020 NCAA Division III Indoor Track and Field Championships in Winston-Salem, North Carolina. Case Western Reserve will be in action next weekend with one final chance to qualify for the event, when the team heads to the ONU Polar Bear Last Chance Meet in Ada, Ohio on Friday, March 6th and Saturday, March 7th.
