Case Western Reserve University junior Taylor Jackson claimed the University Athletic Association Championship in the weight throw, to lead the Spartans during the first day of competition at the 2020 UAA Indoor Track and Field Championships, hosted by New York University in New York, New York.
Jackson finished first in the weight throw with a distance of 15.80 meters on her throw in the finals. She scored 10 points towards the Spartan women's team total with her finish in the event, while sophomore Eleanor Gaddy added two points after finishing seventh with a mark of 13.19 meters.
Adding points for the Spartan women on Saturday, senior Abbey Waltz placed sixth in the pole vault with a mark of 3.38 meters.
Senior Dominic Oddo also claimed All-UAA honors on the first day of competition as he placed second in the long jump with a new school record mark of 7.04 meters. That mark breaks his previous school record 7.00 meters set during the 2018 indoor season. Junior Jordan Butler added points for the Spartan men as he finished eighth in the event with a mark of 6.25 meters.
The Spartan men added one more All-UAA honor on Saturday with senior Brian Holden placing third in the weight throw with a mark of 14.91 meters. Graduate student Tyler Bushman added an eighth place finish with a distance of 14.22 meters.
Adding points for the Spartan was junior Trey Razanauskas, as he finished sixth in the 5,000-meter run with a time of 14:49.86.
After one day of competition, the CWRU men are tied for fourth in the standings with 22 points. Washington (Mo.) leads the standings with 58 points, followed by Chicago with 39 points and Carnegie Mellon with 35. The Spartan women sit in fourth with 17 points. Chicago leads in the standings with 69.33 points, followed by Washington with 45 points and Emory with 34.33 points.
Case Western Reserve is in good position to add onto its team score on Sunday, with four athletes qualifying for finals, following their performances in preliminaries on Saturday.
Sophomore Juan Perez earned a spot in the 200-meter dash after finishing third in the preliminaries with a time of 22.52, and also earned a spot in the 60-meter dash after placing sixth in the preliminaries with a time of 7.09.
In addition, senior Jonathan Haling finished third in the 400-meter dash preliminaries with a time of 49.85, while first-year Eli Fragnoli finished sixth in the 60-meter hurdles with a time of 8.65.
The Spartan women will have junior Julie Hines competing in the 400-meter dash finals tomorrow after finishing fifth in the preliminaries with a tie of 59.31.
The second and final day of the 2020 UAA Indoor Championships is slated to begin with field events at 9:30 a.m. on Sunday, followed by events on the track at 11:30 a.m.
